Jeff Samardzija was traded by the Chicago Cubs to the Oakland Athletics on July 5, 2014 along with Jason Hammel. In exchange the Cubs received Addison Russell, Billy McKinney, Dan Straily and a player to be named later.
RHP Samardzija was 2-7, 2.83 ERA, 103 K, 1.20 WHIP in 108.0 IP over 17 games with the Cubs. For his seven season MLB career with the Cubs he was 31-42, 3.97 ERA, 639 K, 1.33 WHIP, 1 SV in 666.0 IP over 206 games. He was originally drafted by the Cubs in the fifth round in 2006. Samardzija turned 29 on January 23.
RHP Hammel was 8-5, 2.98 ERA, 104 K, 1.02 WHIP in 108.2 IP over 17 games with the Cubs. Over a nine season MLB career with the Cubs, Orioles, Rockies and Rays he was 57-64, 4.62 ERA, 821 K, 1.40 WHIP, 4 SV in 1098.0 IP over 232 games. He was originally drafted by the Tampa Bay Devil Rays in the 10th round in 2002. Hammel will be 32 on September 2nd.
Russell is a shortstop who had split 2014 between Class A Advanced Stockton and Double A Midland. He hit .188/.278/.188 with 0 HR, 1 RBI, 0 R, 1 SB in 5 games at Stockton and .333/.439/.500 with 1 HR, 8 RBI, 7 R, 3 SB in 13 games at Midland. Last season he hit .275/.377/.508 with 17 HR, 60 RBI, 85 R, 21 SB in 107 games at Stockton and .077/.077/.077 with 0 HR, 0 RBI, 1 R, 0 SB in 3 games at Triple A Sacramento. He was originally drafted by the Athletics with the 11th pick of the first round in 2012. Russell turned 20 on January 23.
McKinney is an outfielder who played at Class A Advanced Stockton where he hit .241/.330/.400 with 10 HR, 33 RBI, 42 R, 5 SB in 75 games. He was originally drafted by the Athletics with the 24th pick of the first round in 2013. McKinney will be 20 on August 23.
RHP Straily has split 2014 between Triple A Sacramento and the Athletics. He was 4-3, 4.71 ERA, 67 K, 1.27 WHIP in 63.0 IP over 10 games at Sacramento and 1-2, 4.93 ERA, 34 K, 1.25 WHIP in 38.1 IP over 7 games with the Athletics. He has three seasons MLB experience with the Athletics and was 13-11, 4.11 ERA, 190 K, 1.26 WHIP in 230.0 IP over 41 games. He was originally drafted by the Athletics in the 24th round in 2009. Straily turned 25 on December 1st.
