Wil Myers was traded by the Tampa Bay Rays to the San Diego Padres on December 19, 2014 along with Ryan Hanigan, Jose Castillo and Gerardo Reyes. In exchange the Rays received Rene Rivera, Burch Smith and Jake Bauers from the Padres. The Padres also sent Joe Ross and a PTBNL to the Washington Nationals. The Nationals sent Steven Souza Jr and Travis Ott to the Rays. The PTBNL will be Trea Turner.
Myers is an outfielder who split 2014 between Triple A Durham and the Rays. He hit .250/.419/.542 with 2 HR, 6 RBI, 3 R, 3 SB in 7 games at Durham and .222/.294/.320 with 6 HR, 35 RBI, 37 R, 6 SB in 87 games with the Rays. Over two MLB seasons with the Rays he hit .258/.324/.400 with 19 HR, 88 RBI, 87 R, 11 SB in 175 games. Myers was the American League Rookie of the Year in 2013. He was originally drafted by the Royals in the third round in 2009 and traded to the Rays in 2012. Myers turned 24 on December 10.
Hanigan is a catcher who split 2014 between Class A Advanced Charlotte while rehabbing and the Rays. He hit .250/.375/.400 with 1 HR, 2 RBI, 4 R, 0 SB in 6 games at Charlotte and .218/.318/.324 with 5 HR, 34 RBI, 18 R, 1 SB in 84 games with the Rays. Over eight MLB seasons with the Rays and Reds he has hit .256/.353/.341 with 25 HR, 172 RBI, 146 R, 1 SB in 558 games. His caught stealing rate is 38%. He originally signed with the Reds as an amateur free agent in 2002. Hanigan will be 35 on August 16.
LHP Castillo pitched in 2014 at Rookie Gulf Coast where he was 0-0, 3.86 ERA, 4 K, 1.07 WHIP, .188 BAA in 4.2 IP over 3 games. He originally signed with the Rays in 2012 as an amateur free agent out of Venezuela. Castillo turned 19 on Janaury 10.
RHP Reyes pitched in 2014 at Class A Hudson Valley where he was 2-1, 4.09 ERA, 39 K, 1.24 WHIP, .258 BAA, 3 SV in 33.0 IP over 20 games. He originally signed with the Rays in 2013 as an amateur free agent. Reyes will be 22 on May 13.
Rivera is a catcher who in 2014 hit .252/.319/.432 with 11 HR, 44 RBI, 27 R, 0 SB in 103 games with the Padres. Over six MLB seasons with the Padres, Twins and Mariners he has hit .228/.279/.358 with 15 HR, 66 RBI, 51 R, 1 SB in 224 games. His caught stealing rate is 39%. He was originally drafted by the Mariners in the second round in 2001. Rivera will be 32 on July 31.
RHP Burch missed much of 2014 with a forearm injury but did pitch at Triple A El Paso. He was 0-2, 18.56 ERA, 3 K, 3.38 WHIP, .481 BAA in 5.1 IP over 2 games. He did pitch with the Padres in 2013 as he was 1-3, 6.44 ERA, 46 K, 1.65 WHIP, .269 BAA in 36.1 IP over 10 games. He was originally drafted by the Padres in the 14th round in 2011. Burch will be 25 on April 12.
Bauers is a first baseman who played in 2014 at Class A Fort Wayne where he hit .296/.376/.414 with 8 HR, 64 RBI, 59 R, 5 SB in 112 games. He was originally drafted by the Padres in the seventh round in 2013. Bauers will be 20 on October 6th.
RHP Ross split 2014 between Class A Advanced Lake Elsinore and Double A San Antonio. He was 8-6, 3.98 ERA, 87 K, 1.27 WHIP, .256 BAA in 101.2 IP over 19 games at Lake Elsinore and 2-0, 3.60 ERA, 19 K, 1.20 WHIP, .277 BAA in 20.0 IP over 4 games at San Antonio. He was originally drafted by the Padres with the 25th pick of the first round in 2011. Ross will be 22 on May 21.
Souza is an outfielder who split 2014 between Class A Hagerstown and Class A Advanced Potomac while rehabbing, Triple A Syracuse and the Nationals, He hit .500/.500/.500 with 0 HR, 1 RBI, 0 R, 1 SB in 1 game at Hagerstown, .111/.200/.111 with 0 HR, 1 RBI, 0 R, 1 SB in 3 games at Potomac, .350/.432/.590 with 18 HR, 75 RBI, 62 R, 26 SB in 96 games at Syracuse and .130/.231/.391 with 2 HR, 2 RBI, 2 R, 0 SB in 21 games with the Nationals. He was originally drafted by the Nationals in the third round in 2007. Souza will be 26 on April 24.
LHP Ott split 2014 between Class A Auburn and Class A Hagerstown. He was 1-2, 3.05 ERA, 37 K, 1.24 WHIP, .210 BAA in 44.1 IP over 10 games at Auburn and 0-2, 7.59 ERA, 8 K, 1.78 WHIP, .349 BAA in 10.2 IP over 3 games at Hagerstown. He was originally drafted by the Nationals in the 25th round in 2013. Ott will be 20 on June 29.
Turner is a shortstop who split 2014 between Class A Eugene and Class A Fort Wayne. He hit .228/.324/.283 with 1 HR, 2 RBI, 14 R, 9 SB in 23 games at Eugene and .369/.447/.529 with 4 HR, 22 RBI, 31 R, 14 SB in 46 games at Fort Wayne. He was originally drafted by the Padres with the 13th pick of the first round in 2014. His status is in limbo because of a rule that prevents players from being traded within a year of being drafted so he won't join the Nationals organization until mid-June. Turner will be 22 on June 30.
