College Spotlight 022315

The 2015 college baseball season is under way and this is the fourth year of my doing a College Spotlight segment where I will feature one position player and one pitcher each week. The first two to be featured this year are outfielder Casey Hughton of Alabama and RHP Preston Morrison of Texas Christian University.

Hughston is a sophomore outfielder for the Crimson Tide from Baker High School in Mobile, AL. He has started off the season with six straight multi-hit games including two 4 for 4 performances. That has propelled him to the front of the pack with the best batting average of .720, the second most hits at 18 and tied for fifth in doubles with six. This season he is hitting .720/.724/1.160 with 1 HR, 11 RBI, 11 R, 2 SB in 6 games. Last season as a freshman he hit .270/.302/.402 with 4 HR, 25 RBI, 17 R, 0 SB in 52 games. Alabama has started the season 4-2.

RHP Morrison is a senior Horned Frog from Cuthburtson High School in Waxhaw, NC. He is coming off one of the top national performances of the week as he shut out Arizona State last friday 3-0. His line for the game was 9.0 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 5 K in 87 pitches. For the season he is now 2-0, 0.00 ERA, 8 K, 0.56 WHIP, .118 BAA in 16.0 IP over 2 games. Last season as a junior he was 9-4, 1.32 ERA, 95 K, 0.86 WHIP, .197 BAA in 129.2 IP over 18 games with five complete games. He is establishing himself as the ace for top ranked TCU who is 6-1.
