Justin Upton traded to Padres

Justin Upton was traded by the Atlanta Braves to the San Diego Padres on December 19, 2014 along with Aaron Northcraft. In exchange the Braves received Jace Peterson, Max Fried, Dustin Peterson and Mallex Smith.

Upton is an outfielder who in 2014 hit .270/.342/.491 with 29 HR, 102 RBI, 77 R, 8 SB in 154 games with the Braves. Over eight MLB seasons with the Braves and Diamondbacks he hit .274/.354/.476 with 164 HR, 535 RBI, 609 R, 96 SB in 1034 games. He was originally drafted by the Diamondbacks with the first over all pick of the first round in 2005 and was traded to the Braves in 2013. Upton will be 28 on August 25.

RHP Northcraft split 2014 between Double A Mississippi and Triple A Gwinnett. He was 7-3, 2.88 ERA, 62 K, 1.23 WHIP, .228 BAA in 65.2 IP over 13 games at Mississippi and 0-7, 6.54 ERA, 51 K, 1.81 WHIP, .317 BAA in 64.2 IP over 13 games at Gwinnet. He was originally drafted by the Braves in the 10th round in 2009. Northcraft will be 25 on May 28.

Peterson is a 2B\3B who split 2014 between Double A San Antonio, Triple A El Paso and the Padres. He hit .311/.386/.392 with 1 HR, 7 RBI, 10 R, 4 SB in 18 games at San Antonio, .306/.406/.464 with 2 HR, 39 RBI, 44 R, 12 SB in 68 games at El Paso and .113/.161/.113 with 0 HR, 0 RBI, 3 R, 2 SB in 27 games with the Padres. He was originally drafted by the Padres with the 58th pick of the first round in 2011. Peterson will be 25 on May 9th.

LHP Fried split 2014 between Rookie Arizona and Class A Fort Wayne before having Tommy John surgery. He was 0-0, 5.40 ERA, 8 K, 2.20 WHIP, .348 BAA in 5.0 IP over 3 games at Arizona and 0-1, 4.76 ERA, 2 K, 1.59 WHIP, .318 BAA in 5.2 IP over 2 games at Fort Wayne. Fried was originally drafted by the Padres with the seventh pick of the first round in 2012. Fried turned 21 on January 18.

Peterson is a third baseman who played in 2014 at Class A Fort Wayne where he hit .233/.274/.361 with 10 HR, 79 RBI, 64 R, 1 SB in 126 games. He was originally drafted by the Padres in the second round in 2013. Peterson will be 21 on September 10.

Smith is an outfielder who split 2014 between Class A Fort Wayne and Class A Advanced Lake Elsinore. He hit .295/.393/.394 with 0 HR, 15 RBI, 56 R, 48 SB in 65 games at Fort Wayne and .327/.414/.475 with 5 HR, 16 RBI, 43 R, 40 SB in 55 games at Lake Elsinore. He was originally drafted by the Padres in the fifth round in 2012. Smith will be 22 on May 6th.
