Chasing 50-50 073114

This is the third year of my Chasing 50-50 segment. It started two seasons ago as we followed Matt Kemp of the Dodgers in his self proclaimed attempt to hit 50 home runs and 50 stolen bases. The 2014 season is under way and we are going to follow Kemp's efforts to see if he can make another run. As long as he is playing Kemp will always be part of this. I'm also keeping Mike Trout of the Angels and Carlos Gonzalez of the Rockies in the mix because I think they also have the speed\power combo capable of reaching the mark some day. Others will be added throughout the season as their production warrants. As of  May 1st I am adding Gonzalez's Rockies teammate Charlie Blackmon, Brewers teammates Carlos Gomez and Ryan Braun and Brian Dozier of the Twins. As of July 3rd I am adding Todd Frazier of the Reds, Andrew McCutchen of the Pirates and George Springer of the Astros. This is week 17 of the chase.

Ghost of 62 073014

The reference in the title is the 1962 Mets who are regarded as the worst of the Modern Era for all teams after 1900. The team finished 40-120 and 60.5 games back. For the season the team hit .240/.318/.361 and scored 617 runs which was 3.8 per game. The team ERA was 5.04 and they gave up 948 runs or 5.9 per game.

This is the second year of this series where each week I will check in on the MLB teams with the worst win-loss records and how they measure up to 1962. I start the series in June to give them time to establish their cellar standings. This week those teams at the All Star break are Texas Rangers, Colorado Rockies, Houston Astros, Chicago Cubs, Philadelphia Phillies and Arizona Diamondbacks.

The Rangers are 42-65 and 24.0 games back. That projects to 64-98. The team is hitting .259/.317/.384 and have scored 434 which is 4.1 per game. Their team ERA is 4.87 and have given up 552 runs or 5.2 per game.

The Rockies are 43-63 and 16.5 games back. That projects to 66-96. The team is hitting .280/.331/.449 and have scored 501 which is 4.7 per game. Their team ERA is 4.93 and have given up 555 runs or 5.2 per game.

The Astros are 44-64 and 22.5 games back. That projects to 66-96. The team is hitting .238/.307/.386 and have scored 419 which is 3.9 per game. Their team ERA is 4.45 and have given up 518 runs or 4.8 per game.

The Cubs are 44-61 and 14.0 games back. That projects to 68-94. The team is hitting .237/.299/.382 and have scored 405 which is 3.9 per game. Their team ERA is 3.86 and have given up 451 runs or 4.3 per game.

The Phillies are 47-61 and 12.5 games back. That projects to 71-91. The team is hitting .241/.303/.367 and have scored 416 which is 3.9 per game. Their team ERA is 4.04 and have given up 484 runs or 4.5 per game.

The Diamondbacks are 47-61 and 13.5 games back. That projects to 71-91. The team is hitting .255/.308/.391 and have scored 430 which is 4.0 per game. Their team ERA is 4.22 and have given up 502 runs or 4.6 per game.
