Philadelphia Phillies Selected Contracts Prior to 2013 Rule 5 Draft

The Philadelphia Phillies selected the contracts of Aaron Altherr and Kelly Dugan from Class A Advanced Clearwater and Tommy Joseph and Rob Rasmussen from Triple A Lehigh Valley and placed them on the Phillies 40 man roster. The move was made to protect the players from the upcoming Rule 5 draft on December 12. It is interesting to see which players an organization values as it moves the draft eligible players under the protective roster umbrella.

Altherr is an outfielder who played in 2013 at Clearwater. He hit .275/.337/.455 with 12 HR, 69 RBI, 57 R, 23 SB in 123 games. He was originally drafted by the Phillies in the ninth round in 2009. Altherr will be 23 on January 14.

Dugan is an outfielder who split 2013 between Clearwater and Double A Reading. He hit .318/.401/.539 with 10 HR, 36 RBI, 37 R, 1 SB in 56 games at Clearwater and hit .264/.299/.472 with 10 HR, 23 RBI, 25 R, 0 SB in 56 games at Reading. He was originally drafted by the Phillies in the second round in 2009. Dugan turned 23 on September 18.

Joseph is a catcher who split 2013 between Rookie Gulf Coast, Class A Advanced Clearwater, Double A Reading and Lehigh Valley while missing much of the season with concussion symptoms. He hit .333/.600/.333 with 0 HR, 0 RBI, 0 R, 0 SB in 1 game at Gulf Coast, hit .095/.095/.143 with 0 HR, 1 RBI, 0 R, 0 SB in 11 games at Clearwater, hit .273/.333/.364 with 0 HR, 1 RBI, 0 R, 0 SB in 3 games at Reading and hit .209/.264/.358 with 3 HR, 14 RBI, 6 R, 0 SB in 21 games at Lehigh Valley. He was originally drafted by the Giants in the second round. He was traded to the Phillies in 2012. Joseph turned 22 on July 16.

LHP Rasmussen split 2013 between Double A Chattanooga and Triple A Albuquerque. He was 3-4, 2.55 ERA, 76 K, 1.08 WHIP in 81.1 IP over 16 games at Chattanooga and was 0-7, 6.46 ERA, 37 K, 1.77 WHIP in 54.1 IP over 12 games at Albuquerque. He was originally drafted by the Marlins in the second round in 2010. He was traded to the Astros in July 2012. He was traded to the Dodgers in December 2012. He was traded to the Phillies this September. Rasmussen turned 24 on April 2nd.
