2013 Where are they now 2009 MLB draft top 10

The 2013 season is behind us and I'm checking how the top 10 players of the 2009 draft did this season. Traditionally players drafted out of college advance faster than those drafted out of high school and pitchers usually advance faster than position players. Some players might also be traded to help their team get an established player that can help their team improve immediately.

The first player drafted in 2009 was RHP Stephen Strasburg by the Washington Nationals out of San Diego State. He pitched in 2013 for the Nationals. He was 8-9, 3.00 ERA, 191 K, 1.05 WHIP in 183.0 IP over 30 games.

The Seattle Mariners drafted Dustin Ackley second out of North Carolina. He split 2013 between Triple A Tacoma and the Mariners. He hit .365/.472/.500 with 2 HR, 14 RBI, 21 R, 0 SB in 25 games at Tacoma and hit .253/.319/.341 with 4 HR, 31 RBI, 40 R, 2 SB in 113 games.

The San Diego Padres drafted outfielder Donavan Tate third out of Cartersville High School in Cartersville, GA. He played in 2013 at Class A Eugene after reporting late dealing with personal issues. HE hit .213/.330/.320 with 0 HR, 6 RBI, 6 R, 3 SB in 23 games.

The Pittsburgh Pirates drafted catcher Tony Sanchez fourth out of Boston College. He split 2013 between Double A Altoona, Triple A Indianapolis and the Pirates. He hit .176/.176/.235 with 0 HR, 0 RBI, 2 R, 0 SB in 4 games at Altoona, hit .288/.368/.504 with 10 HR, 42 RBI, 35 R, 0 SB in 76 games at Indianapolis and hit .233/.288/.400 with 2 HR, 5 RBI, 9 R, 0 SB in 22 games with the Pirates.

The Baltimore Orioles drafted RHP Matthew Hobgood fifth out of Norco High School in Norco, CA. He split 2013 between Class Delmarva and Class A Advanced Frederick. He was 7-3, 3.71 ERA, 47 K, 1.41 WHIP, 1 SV in 63.0 IP over 24 games at Delmarva and was 2-1, 5.58 ERA, 25 K, 1.30 WHIP in 30.2 IP over 9 games at Frederick.

The San Francisco Giants drafted RHP Zack Wheeler sixth out of East Paulding High School in Dallas, GA. He was traded to the Mets in 2011. He split 2013 between Triple A Las Vegas and the Mets. He was 4-2, 3.93 ERA, 73 K, 1.28 WHIP in 68.2 IP over 13 games at Las Vegas and was 7-5, 3.42 ERA, 84 K, 1.36 WHIP in 100.0 IP over 17 games with the Mets.

The Atlanta Braves drafted LHP Mike Minor seventh out of Vanderbilt. He pitched in 2013 with the Braves. He was 13-9, 3.21 ERA, 181 K, 1.09 WHIP in 204.2 IP over 32 games.

The Cincinnati Reds drafted RHP Mike Leake eighth out of Arizona State. He pitched in 2013 with the Reds. He was 14-7, 3.37 ERA, 122 K, 1.25 WHIP in 192.1 IP over 31 games.

The Detroit Tigers drafted RHP Jacob Turner ninth out of Westminster Christian Academy in St Louis, MO. He was traded to the Marlins in 2012. He split 2013 between Triple A New Orleans and the Marlins. He was 3-4, 4.47 ERA, 35 K, 1.30 WHIP in 56.1 IP over 10 games at New Orleans and was 3-8, 3.74 ERA, 77 K, 1.44 WHIP in 118.0 IP over 20 games with the Marlins.

The Washington Nationals drafted RHP Drew Storen tenth out of Stanford. He split 2013 between Triple A Syracuse and the Nationals. He was 0-0, 5.68 ERA, 11 K, 1.10 WHIP in 6.1 IP over 6 games at Syracuse and was 4-2, 4.52 ERA, 58 K, 1.36 WHIP, 3 SV in 61.2 IP over 68 games with the Nationals.
