Houston Astros Selected Contracts Prior to 2013 Rule 5 Draft

The Houston Astros selected the contracts of Luis Cruz and Domingo Santana from Double A Corpus Christi and Asher Wojciechowski from Triple A Oklahoma City and placed them on the Astros 40 man roster. The move was made to protect the players from the upcoming Rule 5 draft on December 12. It is interesting to see which players an organization values as it moves the draft eligible players under the protective roster umbrella.

LHP Cruz split 2013 between Class A Advanced Lancaster and Corpus Christi. He was 8-6, 5.16 ERA, 129 K, 1.33 WHIP, 2 SV in 113.1 IP over 27 games at Lancaster and was 2-0, 0.53 ERA, 21 K, 0.53 WHIP in 17.0 IP over 4 games at Corpus Christi. He was originally drafted by the Astros in the ninth round in 2008. Cruz turned 23 on September 10.

Santana is an outfielder who played in 2013 at Corpus Christi. He hit .252/.345/.498 with 25 HR, 64 RBI, 72 R, 12 SB in 112 games. He originally signed with the Phillies in 2009 as an amateur free agent out of the Dominican Republic. He was traded to the Astros in 2011. Santana turned 21 on August 5th.

RHP Wojciechowski split 2013 between Double A Corpus Christi and Oklahoma City. He was 2-1, 2.08 ERA, 27 K, 0.92 WHIP, 1 SV in 26.0 IP over 6 games at Corpus Christi and was 9-7, 3.56 ERA, 104 K, 1.19 WHIP in 134.0 IP over 22 games at Oklahoma City. He was originally drafted by the Blue Jays with the 41st pick of the first round in 2010. He was traded to the Astros in 2012Wojciechowski will be 25 on December 21.
