San Diego Padres Selected Contracts Prior to 2013 Rule 5 Draft

The San Diego Padres selected the contracts of Donn Roach and Juan Oramas from Double A San Antonio and Keyvius Sampson from Triple A Tucson and placed them on the Padres 40 man roster. The move was made to protect the players from the upcoming Rule 5 draft on December 12. It is interesting to see which players an organization values as it moves the draft eligible players under the protective roster umbrella.

RHP Roach pitched in 2013 at San Antonio. He was 8-12, 3.53 ERA, 77 K, 1.25 WHIP in 142.2 IP over 28 games. He was originally drafted by the Angels in the third round in 2010. He was traded to the Padres in 2012. Roach will be 24 on December 14.

LHP Oramas split 2013 between Rookie Arizona and San Antonio. He was 0-0, 1.29 ERA, 15 K, 1.14 WHIP in 7.0 IP over 2 games at Arizona and was 3-2, 3.07 ERA, 64 K, 1.22 WHIP in 55.2 IP over 12 games. He originally signed with the Padres in 2006 as an amateur free agent out of Mexico. Oramas turned 23 on May 11.

RHP Sampson split 2013 between Double A San Antonio and Tucson. He was 10-4, 2.26 ERA, 110 K, 1.03 WHIP in 103.1 IP over 19 games at San Antonio and was 2-3, 7.11 ERA, 25 K, 1.92 WHIP in 38.0 IP over 9 games at Tucson. He was originally drafted by the Padres in the fourth round in 2009. Sampson will be 23 on January 6th.
