Colorado Rockies Selected Contracts Prior to 2013 Rule 5 Draft

The Colorado Rockies selected the contracts of Jayson Aquino, Raul Fernandez and Rosell Herrera from Class A Asheville, Kraig Sitton from Class A Advanced Modesto, Tyler Matzek and Kyle Parker from Double A Tulsa and Kent Matthes from Triple A Colorado Springs and placed them on the Rockies 40 man roster. The move was made to protect the players from the upcoming Rule 5 draft on December 12. It is interesting to see which players an organization values as it moves the draft eligible players under the protective roster umbrella.

LHP Aquino split 2013 between Class A Tri-City and Asheville. He was 0-1, 3.13 ERA, 16 K, 1.13 WHIP in 23.0 IP over 4 games at Tri-City and was 0-9, 4.78 ERA, 57 K, 1.36 WHIP in 64.0 IP over 11 games at Asheville. He originally signed with the Rockies in 2009 as an amateur free agent out of the Dominican Republic. Aquino turned 21 on November 22.

RHP Fernandez pitched in 2013 at Asheville. He was 2-2, 6.29 ERA, 55 K, 1.49 WHIP, 16 SV in 34.1 IP over 35 games. He originally signed with the Rockies in 2007 as an amateur free agent out of the Dominican Republic. Fernandez turned 22 on June 22.

Herrera is a SS\3B who played in 2013 at Asheville. He hit .343/.419/.515 with 16 HR, 76 RBI, 83 R, 21 SB in 126 games. He originally signed with the Rockies in 2009 as an amateur free agent out of the Dominican Republic. Herrera turned 21 on October 16.

LHP Sitton pitched in 2013 at Modesto. He was 6-5, 2.93 ERA, 63 K, 1.30 WHIP, 2 SV in 67.2 IP over 52 games. He was originally drafted by the Rockies in the seventh round in 2010. Sitton turned 25 on July 13.

LHP Matzek pitched in 2013 at Tulsa. He was 8-9, 3.79 ERA, 95 K, 1.57 WHIP in 142.1 IP over 26 games. He was originally drafted by the Rockies with the 11th pick of the first round in 2009. Matzuk turned 23 on October 19.

Parker is an outfielder played in 2013 at Tulsa. He hit .288/.345/.492 with 23 HR, 74 RBI, 70 R, 6 SB in 123 games. He was originally drafted by the Rockies with the 26th pick of the first round in 2010. Parker turned 24 on September 30.

Matthes is an outfielder who split 2013 between Double A Tulsa and Colorado Springs. He hit .270/.335/.484 with 9 HR, 32 RBI, 31 R, 11 SB in 68 games at Tulsa and hit .297/.333/.531 with 11 HR, 31 RBI, 25 R, 6 SB in 47 games at Colorado Springs. He was originally drafted by the Rockies in the fourth round in 2009. Matthes will be 27 on January 8th.
