St Louis Cardinals Selected Contracts Prior to 2013 Rule 5 Draft

The St Louis Cardinals selected the contracts of Oscar Taveras, Mike O'Neill and Greg Garcia Triple A Memphis and placed them on the Cardinals 40 man roster. The move was made to protect the players from the upcoming Rule 5 draft on December 12. It is interesting to see which players an organization values as it moves the draft eligible players under the protective roster umbrella.

Taveras is an outfielder who split 2013 between Rookie Gulf Coast while rehabbing and Memphis while missing much of the season with an ankle injury. He hit 1.000/1.000/2.000 with 0 HR, 0 RBI, 0 R, 0 SB in 1 game at Gulf Coast and hit .306/.341/.462 with 5 HR, 32 RBI, 25 R, 5 SB in 46 games at Memphis. He originally signed with the Cardinals in 2008 as an amateur free agent out of the Dominican Republic. Taveras turned 32 on June 19.

O'Neill is an outfielder who split 2013 between Double A Springfield and Memphis. He hit .320/.431/.384 with 2 HR, 35 RBI, 66 R, 18 SB in 98 games at Springfield and hit .295/.402/.321 with 0 HR, 3 RBI, 16 R, 1 SB in 32 games at Memphis. He was originally drafted by the Cardinals in the 31st round in 2010. O'Neill will be 26 on February 12.

Garcia is a SS\2B\3B who played in 2013 at Memphis. He hit .271/.377/.384 with 3 HR, 35 RBI, 50 R, 14 SB in 116 games. He was drafted by the Cardinals in the seventh round in 2010. Garcia turned 24 on August 8th.
