Pittsburgh Pirates Selected Contracts Prior to 2013 Rule 5 Draft

The Pittsburgh Pirates selected the contracts of Joely Rodriguez from Class A Advanced Bradenton, Alen Hanson from Double A Altoona and Casey Sadler and Gregory Polanco from Triple A Indianapolis and placed them on the Pirates 40 man roster. The move was made to protect the players from the upcoming Rule 5 draft on December 12. It is interesting to see which players an organization values as it moves the draft eligible players under the protective roster umbrella.

LHP Rodriguez split 2013 between Class A West Virginia and Bradenton. He was 5-5, 2.72 ERA, 57 K, 1.36 WHIP in 72.2 IP over 14 games at West Virginia and was 4-3, 2.67 ERA, 44 K, 1.22 WHIP in 67.1 IP over 12 games at Bradenton. He originally signed with the Pirates in 2009 as an amateur free agent out of the Dominican Republic. Rodriguez turned 22 on November 14.

Hanson is a shortstop who split 2013 between Class A Advanced Bradenton and Altoona, He hit .281/.339/.444 with 7 HR, 48 RBI, 51 R, 24 SB in 92 games at Bradenton and hit .255/.299/.380 with 1 HR, 10 RBI, 13 R, 6 SB in 35 games at Altoona. 

RHP Sadler split 2013 between Double A Altoona and Indianapolis. He was 11-7, 3.31 ERA, 67 K, 1.21 WHIP in 130.1 IP over 23 games at Altoona and was 0-0, 4.50 ERA, 5 K, 1.33 WHIP in 6.0 IP in 1 game at Indianapolis. He was originally drafted by the Pirates in the 25th round in 2010. Sadler turned 23 on July 13.

Polanco is an outfielder who split 2013 between Class A Advanced Bradenton, Double A Altoona and Indianapolis. He hit .312/.364/.472 with 6 HR, 30 RBI, 29 R, 24 SB in 57 games at Bradenton, hit .263/.354/.407 with 6 HR, 41 RBI, 36 R, 13 SB in 68 games at Altoona and hit .222/.222/.222 with 0 HR, 0 RBI, 1 R, 1 SB in 2 games at Indianapolis. He originally signed with the Pirates in 2009 as an amateur free agent out of the Dominican Republic. Polanco turned 22 on September 14.
