Max Scherzer of the Detroit Tigers won the 2013 American League Cy Young Award by the Baseball Writers Association of America. He had 28 first place votes and 203 points total. The rest of the top five were Yu Darvish of the Rangers with 93 points, Hisashi Iwakuma of the Mariners with 73 points, Anibal Sanchez of the Tigers with one first place vote and 46 points and Chris Sale of the White Sox with one first place vote and 44 points. Others receiving votes were Bartolo Colon of the Athletics with 25 points, Koji Uehara of the Red Sox with 10 points, Felix Hernandez of the Mariners with 6 points, Matt Moore of the Rays with 4 points, Greg Holland of the Royals with 4 points and James Shields of the Royals with 2 points.
The RHP was 21-3, 2.90 ERA, 240 K, 0.97 WHIP in 214.1 IP over 32 games in 2013. Over his six season MLB career he is 73-45, 3.67 ERA, 1069 K, 1.23 WHIP in 1019.0 IP over 174 games. He was originally drafted by the Diamondbacks with the 11th pick of the first round in 2006. He was traded to the Tigers in 2009. Scherzer turned 29 on July 27.
