The Seattle Mariners selected the contracts of Logan Bawcom, Ji-Man Choi, James Jones and Stefen Romero from Triple A Tacoma and placed them on the Mariners 40 man roster. The move was made to protect the players from the upcoming Rule 5 draft on December 12. It is interesting to see which players an organization values as it moves the draft eligible players under the protective roster umbrella.
RHP Bawcom pitched in 2013 at Tacoma. He was 1-4, 2.91 ERA, 64 K, 1.23 WHIP, 21 SV in 65.0 IP over 51 games. He was originally drafted by the Dodgers in the 17th round in 2010. He was traded to the Mariners in 2012. Bawcom turned 25 on November 2nd.
Choi is a first baseman who split 2013 between Class A Advanced High Desert, Double A Jackson and Tacoma. He hit .337/.427/.619 with 7 HR, 40 RBI, 34 R, 0 SB in 48 games at High Desert, hit .268/.377/.485 with 9 HR, 39 RBI, 21 R, 2 SB in 61 games at Jackson and hit .244/.333/.422 with 2 HR, 6 RBI, 9 R, 0 SB in 13 games at Tacoma. He originally signed with the Mariners in 2009 as an amateur free agent out of South Korea. Choi turned 22 on May 19.
Jones is an outfielder who split 2013 between Double A Jackson and Tacoma. He hit .275/.347/.419 with 6 HR, 45 RBI, 44 R, 28 SB in 101 games at Jackson and hit .333/.412/.467 with 0 HR, 1 RBI, 2 R, 0 SB in 4 games at Tacoma. He was originally drafted by the Mariners in the fourth round in 2009. Jones turned 25 on September 24.
Romero is an outfielder who split 2013 between Class A Advanced High Desert and Tacoma. He hit .278/.381/.333 with 0 HR, 2 RBI, 1 R, 0 SB in 5 games at High Desert and hit .277/.331/.448 with 11 HR, 74 RBI, 51 R, 8 SB in 93 games at Tacoma. He was originally drafted by the Mariners in the 12th round in 2010. Romero turned 25 on October 17.
