Miguel Cabrera of the Detroit Tigers was named the 2013 American League Most Valuable Player by the Baseball Writers Association of America. It was his second straight MVP award. He garnered 23 first place votes and 385 points total. The rest of the top five were Mike Trout of the Angels with five first place votes and 282 points total, Chris Davis of the Orioles with one first place vote and 232 points, Josh Donaldson with one first place vote and 222 points and Robinson Cano of the Yankees with 150 points.
Others receiving votes were Evan Longoria of the Rays with 103 points, Dustin Pedroia of the Red Sox with 99, Adrian Beltre of the Rangers with 99, Manny Machado of the Orioles with 57, David Ortiz of the Red Sox with 47, Jason Kipnis of the Indians with 31, Max Scherzer of the Tigers with 25, Adam Jones of the with 9, Edwin Encarnacion of the Blue Jays with 7, Greg Holland of the Royals with 3, Carlos Santana of the Indians with 3, Coco Crisp of the Athletics with 3, Jacoby Ellsbury of the Red Sox with 3, Torii Hunter of the Tigers with 2, Hisashi Iwakuma of the Mariners with 2, Koji Uehara of the Red Sox with 2, Yu Darvish of the Rangers with 1, Felix Hernandez of the Mariners with 1, Salvador Perez of the Royals with 1 and Shane Victorino of the Red Sox with 1.
The Tigers third baseman hit .348/.442/.636 with 44 HR, 137 RBI, 103 R, 3 SB in 148 games in 2013. Over his 11 season MLB career with the Tigers and Marlins he has hit .321/.399/.568 with 365 HR, 1260 RBI, 1064 R, 36 SB in 1660 games. He originally signed with the Marlins in 1999 as an amateur free agent out of Venezuela. Cabrera turned 30 on April 18.
