The Detroit Tigers selected the contracts of Jose Valdez and Steven Moya from Class A Advanced Lakeland, Eugenio Suarez and Daniel Fields from Double A Erie and Kyle Lobstein, Justin Miller and Jordan Lennerton from Triple A Toledo and placed them on the Tigers 40 man roster. The move was made to protect the players from the upcoming Rule 5 draft on December 12. It is interesting to see which players an organization values as it moves the draft eligible players under the protective roster umbrella.
RHP Valdez split 2013 between Class A West Michigan and Class A Advanced Lakeland. He was 1-1, 2.73 ERA, 35 K, 1.37 WHIP, 16 SV in 26.1 IP over 27 games at West Michigan and was 1-1, 2.74 ERA, 32 K, 1.30 WHIP, 17 SV in 23.0 IP over 23 games at Lakeland. He originally signed with the Tigers in 2009 as an amateur free agent out of the Dominican Republic. Valdez turned 23 on March 1st.
Moya is an outfielder who played in 2013 at Lakeland. He hit .255/.296/.433 with 12 HR, 55 RBI, 52 R, 6 SB in 93 games. He originally signed with the Tigers in 2008 as an amateur free agent out of Puerto Rico. Moya turned 22 on September 8th.
Suarez is a SS/2B who split 2013 between Class A Advanced Lakeland and Erie. He hit .311/.410/.437 with 1 HR, 12 RBI, 17 R, 2 SB in 25 games at Lakeland and hit .253/.332/.387 with 9 HR, 45 RBI, 53 R, 9 SB in 111 games at Erie. He originally signed with the Tigers in 2008 as an amateur free agent out of Venezuela. Suarez turned 22 on July 18.
Fields is an outfielder who played in 2013 at Erie. He hit .284/.356/.435 with 10 HR, 58 RBI, 71 R, 24 SB in 118 games. He was originally drafted by the Tigers in the sixth round in 2009. Fields will be 23 on January 23.
LHP Lobstein split 2013 between Double A Erie and Toledo. He was 7-4, 3.12 ERA, 83 K, 1.25 WHIP in 95.1 IP over 15 games at Erie and was 6-3, 3.48 ERA, 65 K, 1.36 WHIP in 72.1 IP over 13 games at Toledo. He was originally drafted by the Tigers in the second round in 2008. Lobstein turned 24 on August 12.
RHP Miller split 2013 between Double A Frisco and Triple A Round Rock. He was 1-0, 6.19 ERA, 21 K, 1.44 WHIP, 2 SV in 16.0 IP over 16 games at Frisco and was 0-1, 9.82 ERA, 12 K, 2.09 WHIP, 1 SV in 11.0 IP over 11 games at Round Rock. He was originally drafted by the Rangers in the 16th round in 2008. He signed a minor league contract with the Tigers in September. Miller turned 26 on June 13.
Lennerton is a first baseman who played in 2013 at Toledo. He hit .278/.382/.430 with 17 HR, 57 RBI, 68 R, 0 SB in 139 games. He was originally drafted by the Tigers in the 33rd round in 2008. Lennerton will be 28 on February 16.
