Chicago Cubs Selected Contracts Prior to 2013 Rule 5 Draft

The Chicago Cubs selected the contracts of Arismendy Alcantara and Dallas Beeler from Double A Tennessee and placed them on the Cubs 40 man roster. The move was made to protect the players from the upcoming Rule 5 draft on December 12. It is interesting to see which players an organization values as it moves the draft eligible players under the protective roster umbrella.

Alcantara is a SS\2B who played in 2013 at Tennessee. He hit .271/.352/.451 with 15 HR, 69 RBI, 69 R, 31 SB in 133 games. He originally signed with the Cubs in 2008 as an amateur free agent out of the Dominican Republic. Alcantara turned 22 on October 29.

RHP Beeler pitched in 2013 at Tennessee. He was 4-2, 3.13 ERA, 35 K, 1.10 WHIP in 54.2 IP over 9 games and missed much of the season due to a finger injury on his right hand. He was originally drafted by the Cubs with the 41st pick in 2010. Beeler turned 24 on June 12.
