The Boston Red Sox selected the contracts of Garin Cecchini from Double A Portland and Bryce Brentz and Anthony Ranaudo from Triple A Pawtucket and placed them on the Red Sox 40 man roster. The move was made to protect the players from the upcoming Rule 5 draft on December 12. It is interesting to see which players an organization values as it moves the draft eligible players under the protective roster umbrella.
Cecchini is a third baseman who split 2013 between Class A Advanced Salem and Portland. He hit .350/.469/.547 with 5 HR, 33 RBI, 44 R, 15 SB in 63 games at Salem and hit .296/.420/.404 with 2 HR, 28 RBI, 36 R, 8 SB in 66 games at Portland. He was originally drafted by the Red Sox in the fourth round in 2010. Cecchini turned 22 on April 20.
Brentz is an outfielder who split 2013 between Rookie Gulf Coast while rehabbing and Pawtucket. He hit .235/.316/.706 with 2 HR, 8 RBI, 3 R, 0 SB in 6 games at Gulf Coast and hit .264/.312/.475 with 17 HR, 56 RBI, 36 R, 1 SB in 82 games at Pawtucket. He was originally drafted by the Red Sox with the 36th pick of the first round in 2010. Brentz will be 25 on December 30.
RHP Ranaudo split 2013 between Double A Portland and Pawtucket. He was 8-4, 2.95 ERA, 106 K, 1.09 WHIP in 109.2 IP over 19 games at Portland and was 3-1, 2.97 ERA, 21 K, 1.29 WHIP in 30.1 IP over 6 games at Pawtucket. He was originally drafted by the Red Sox with the 39th pick of the first round in 2010. Ranaudo turned 24 on September 9th.
