James Bunning was inducted into the MLB Hall of Fame class of 1996 along with Bill Foster, Ned Hanlon and Earl Weaver. Bunning was a RHP with 17 seasons MLB experience pitching with the Detroit Tigers (1955-1963), Philadelphia Phillies (1964-1967, 1970-1971), Pittsburgh Pirates (1968-1969) and Los Angeles Dodgers (1969). For his MLB career he was 224-184 with a 3.27 ERA, 2855 K, 1.18 WHIP, 16 SV, 151 complete games, 40 shut outs in 3760.1 IP over 591 games.
I believe his three best seasons were 1957 when he was 20-8 with a 2.69 ERA, 182 K, 1.07 WHIP, 1 SV, 14 complete games, 1 shut out in 267.1 IP over 45 games, 1965 when he was 19-9 with a 2.60 ERA, 268 K, 1.08 WHIP, 15 complete games, 7 shut outs in 291.0 IP over 39 games and 1964 when he was 19-8 with a 2.63 ERA, 219 K, 1.03 WHIP, 2 SV, 13 complete games, 5 shut outs in 284.1 IP over 41 games.
Bunning led the American League in wins in 1957. He led the AL in strikeouts in 1959 (201) and 1960 (201). He led the National League in strikeouts in 1967 (253). He led the NL in shut outs in 1966 (5) and 1967 (6).
He was an All Star nine times (1957, 1959, 1961-1964, 1966). Bunning pitched a no hitter on July 20, 1958 against the Boston Red Sox and pitched a perfect game on June 21, 1964 against the New York Mets.
