Here is my week four installment of College Spotlight for 2013. This week I am looking at Michael Miller of Dallas Baptist and Jason Hursh of Oklahoma State.
Junior catcher Michael Miller is out of Mansfield High School in Mansfield, TX. Miller is showing some offensive spark while doing a good job behind the plate. The season he is hitting .347/.358/.493 with 2 HR, 19 RBI, 13 R, 0 SB in 18 games. He has thrown out six of 12 runners that have attempted to steal for a very good 50% rate. Last season as a sophomore he hit .234/.320/.252 with 0 HR, 11 RBI, 10 R, 0 SB in 38 games and threw out 2 of 3 base runners. It is a plus having a strong arm behind the plate who is also developing as a hitter.
Sophomore RHP Jason Hursh is out of Trinity Christian High School in Carrollton, TX. Hursh is a young pitcher who has shown enough flashes to indicate he has a bright future. He has started the season with a handful of no decisions but is still a respectable 1-0 with a 2.00 ERA, 18 K, 0.85 WHIP in 27.0 IP over 4 games while holding opposing batters to a .196 average. He is bouncing back after missing 2012 after having Tommy John surgery. As a freshman in 2011 he was 1-1 with a 2.73 ERA, 10 K, 1.58 WHIP in 29.2 IP over 10 games. Hursh is on the cusp and has the ability to be a dominating pitcher.
