Alejandro (Alex) Pompez was inducted into the MLB Hall of Fame class of 2006 along with Raymond Brown, Willard Brown, Andy Cooper, Franklin Grant, Pete Hill, Biz Mackey, Effa Manley, Jose Mendez, Cum Posey, Louis Santop, Bruce Sutter, Mule Suttles, Ben Taylor, Cristobal Torriente, Solomon White, JL Wilkinson and Jud Wilson. Pompez was inducted by the Negro League Committee as an executive and pioneer. He was owner of the New York Cuban Stars (1922-1929) and New York Cubans (1935-1950). He helped organize the Negro World Series which at the time was called the Colored World Series in 1924.
He was a pioneer in getting lights installed for night games in 1930 which was eight years before the first MLB night game. Pomez served as vice president of the Negro National League 1946-1948. The Cubans won the Negro League World Series in 1947. In 1948 Pomez reached an agreement which made the Cubans a farm club of the New York Giants. Pomez worked as a scout for the Giants for several years and helped pave the path for several Latin players into MLB.
