College Spotlight 030713

Here is my week three installment of College Spotlight for 2013. This week I am looking at Michael Conforto of Oregon State and Jordan Hymel of Southeastern Louisiana.

Sophomore outfielder Michael Conforto is out of Redmond High School in Redmond, WA. Conforto is carrying the power stick for the undefeated Beavers. He is coming off a 3 for 5, 2 HR, 7 RBI, 3 R game last Sunday against Bryant. This season he is hitting .356/.474/.711 with 4 HR, 16 RBI, 12 R, 2 SB in 12 games. Oregon State is a perfect 12-0 and Conforto is setting the pace at the plate. He quickly established himself last season as a freshman leading the team by hitting .349/.438/.601 with 13 HR, 76 RBI, 45 R, 1 SB in 58 games. Conforto will be fun to watch this season and next as he tries to lead his team back to Omaha.

Senior LHP Jordan Hymel is out of Lutcher High School in Gramercy, LA. Hymel had a couple hiccups to start the season with a no decision in the season opener against UT-Martin and got shelled by national power LSU in his second outing. Then Hymel hit the reset in impressive fashion by tossing a no hitter against Texas Southern last Sunday. For the game his line was 9.0 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 6 BB, 7 K as he faced 33 batters in a 9-0 victory. That puts his season stats at 1-1, 4.70 ERA, 16 K, 1.37 WHIP in 15.1 IP over 3 games. As a junior last season he was 6-3, 2.64 ERA, 55 K, 1.09 WHIP in 81.1 IP over 14 games. Kudos to Hymel for no hitter and maybe it will jump start his season.
