2013 Rule 5 Draft Triple A Phase

After the Major League phase of the Rule 5 draft there is also a minor league draft. One part is the Triple A phase where teams have the option to draft players from Double A level teams or lower to play for their Triple A teams. The cost is $12,000 for each player.

The Houston Astros selected outfielder Ravel Santana from the New York Yankees. He missed the 2013 season with an ankle injury. He played in 2012 at Class A Staten Island where he hit .216/.304/.289 with 3 HR, 19 RBI, 22 R, 3 SB in 60 games. He originally signed with the Yankees in 2008 as an amateur free agent out of the Dominican Republic. Santana turned 21 on May 1st.

The Miami Marlins selected first baseman Justin Bour from the Chicago Cubs. He played in 2013 at Double A Tennessee. He hit .237/.313/.461 with 18 HR, 64 RBI, 48 R, 0 SB in 83 games. He was originally drafted by the Cubs in the 25th round in 2009. Bour turned 25 on May 28.

The Chicago White Sox selected LHP Evan Crawford from the Toronto Blue Jays. He split 2013 between Class A Advanced Dunedin and Double A New Hampshire. He was 0-0, 5.14 ERA, 11 K, 1.43 WHIP in 7.0 IP over 5 games at Dunedin and was 2-2, 5.68 ERA, 33 K, 1.76 WHIP, 1 SV in 38.0 IP over 32 games at New Hampshire. He was originally drafted by the Blue Jays in the eighth round in 2008. Crawford turned 27 on September 2nd.

The Chicago Cubs selected catcher Charles Cutler from the Pittsburgh Pirates. He played in 2013 at Double A Altoona. He hit .298/.397/.420 with 3 HR, 26 RBI, 32 R, 3 SB in 86 games. He was originally drafted by the Cardinals in the 14th round in 2008. Cutler turned 27 on July 29.

The Minnesota Twins selected RHP Kevin Thomas from the St Louis Cardinals. He split 2013 between Double A Springfield and Triple A Memphis. He was 6-4, 2.56 ERA, 75 K, 1.11 WHIP, 1 SV in 46 games at Springfield and was 0-1, 10.80 ERA, 5 K, 1.80 WHIP in 3.1 IP over 4 games at Memphis. He was originally drafted by the Cardinals in the 33rd round in 2008. Thomas turned 27 on July 8th.

The Toronto Blue Jays selected RHP Roberto Espinosa from the Pittsburgh Pirates. He split 2013 between Rookie Gulf Coast, Class A Jamestown and Class A Advanced Bradenton. He was 0-0, 0.00 ERA, 3 K, 0.75 WHIP, 2 SV in 1.1 IP over 2 games at Gulf Coast, was 3-2, 2.55 ERA, 26 K, 1.22 WHIP, 5 SV in 24.2 IP over 18 games at Jamestown and was 0-0, 0.00 ERA, 2 K, 0.00 WHIP in 1.1 IP in 1 game at Bradenton. He originally signed with the Pirates in 2008 as an amateur free agent out of Mexico. Espinosa turned 21 on May 7th.

The New York Mets selected RHP Jonathan Velasquez from the Minnesota Twins. He played in 2013 at Camden in the Independent Atlantic League. He was 6-2, 1.95 ERA, 82 K, 1.14 WHIP in 73.2 IP over 61 games. He signed a minor league contract with the Twins in November 2013. He originally signed with the Phillies in 2009 as a non-drafted free agent out of Northwood University. Velasquez turned 28 on October 15.

The Milwaukee Brewers selected outfielder Kevin Mattison from the Miami Marlins. He played in 2013 at Triple A New Orleans. He hit .216/.293/.368 with 7 HR, 31 RBI, 55 R, 18 SB in 106 games. He was originally drafted by the Marlins in the 28th round in 2008. Mattison turned 28 on September 20.

The San Diego Padres selected shortstop Jacob Lemmerman from the St Louis Cardinals. He played in 2013 at Double A Springfield. He hit .231/.353/.367 with 8 HR, 36 RBI, 46 R, 11 SB in 98 games. He was originally drafted by the Dodgers in the fifth round in 2010. He was traded to the Cardinals in 2012. Lemmerman turned 24 on May 4th.

The Los Angeles Angels selected RHP Jose Valdivia from the Seattle Mariners. He pitched in 2013 at Class A Everett. He was 3-0, 2.23 ERA, 36 K, 0.93 WHIP, 3 SV in 32.1 IP over 20 games. He originally signed with the Mariners in 2008 as an amateur free agent out of Nicaragua. Valdivia turned 21 on March 19.

The Arizona Diamondbacks selected RHP Michael Lee from the Atlanta Braves. He split 2013 between Double A Mississippi and Triple A Gwinnett. He was 9-8, 3.71 ERA, 79 K, 1.38 WHIP in 128.2 IP over 25 games at Mississippi and was 0-0, 5.40 ERA, 1 K, 2.60 WHIP in 5.0 IP in 1 game at Gwinnett. He was originally signed by the Red Sox in the eighth round in 2008. Lee turned 27 on November 18.

The Baltimore Orioles selected outfielder Julio Borbon from the Chicago Cubs. He split 2013 between Triple A Iowa, the Cubs and the Rangers. He was selected off waivers by the Cubs from the Rangers in April 2013. He hit .260/.360/.329 with 0 HR, 1 RBI, 10 R, 5 SB in 24 games at Iowa, hit .202/.284/.279 with 1 HR, 3 RBI, 10 R, 7 SB in 72 games with the Cubs and was 0 for 1 in 1 game with the Rangers. For his four season MLB career with the Cubs and Rangers he has hit .272/.318/.347 with 8 HR, 76 RBI, 111 R, 47 SB in 288 games. He was originally drafted by the 35th pick of the first round in 2007. Borbon will be 28 on February 20.

The Washington Nationals selected outfielder Theodis Bowe from the Cincinnati Reds.He played in 2013 at Double A Pensacola. He hit .206/.260/.307 with 4 HR, 16 RBI, 19 R, 13 SB in 99 games. He was originally drafted by the Reds in the 21st round in 2008. Bowe turned 23 on August 5th.

The Cincinnati Reds selected RHP Michael O'Brien from the New York Yankees. He split 2013 between Class A Advanced Tampa and Double A Trenton. He was 1-2, 4.39 ERA, 34 K, 1.54 WHIP in 26.2 IP over 6 games at Tampa and was 7-8, 4.12 ERA, 90 K, 1.41 WHIP in 107.0 IP over 21 games at Trenton. He was originally drafted by the Yankees in the ninth round in 2008. O'Brien turned 23 on March 3rd.

The Texas Rangers selected second baseman Russell Wilson from the Colorado Rockies. Wilson is currently the Seattle Seahawks starting quarterback. He last played baseball in 2011 at Class A Ashville. He hit .228/.366/.342 with 3 HR, 15 RBI, 40 R, 15 SB in 61 games. He was originally drafted by the Rockies in the fourth round in 2010. Wilson turned 25 on November 29.

The Tampa Bay Rays selected RHP Enderson Franco from the Houston Astros. He pitched in 2013 at Rookie Greeneville. He was 2-5, 5.05 ERA, 41 K, 1.47 WHIP in 51.2 IP over 12 games. He originally signed with the Astros in 2009 as an amateur free agent out of Venezuela. Franco will be 21 on December 29.

The Pittsburgh Pirates selected RHP Tyler Sample from the Kansas City Royals. He pitched in 2013 at Class A Advanced Wilmington. He was 2-4, 5.06 ERA, 47 K, 1.92 WHIP in 48.0 IP over 18 games. He was originally drafted by the Royals in the third round in 2008. Sample turned 24 on June 27.

The Oakland Athletics selected RHP Tim Atherton from the Minnesota Twins. He pitched in 2013 at Class A Cedar Rapids. He was 8-5, 2.54 ERA, 102 K, 1.14 WHIP, 1 SV in 95.2 IP over 31 games. He originally signed with the Twins in 2007 as an international free agent out of Australia. Atherton turned 24 on November 7th.

The Boston Red Sox selected shortstop Jonathan Roof from the Philadelphia Phillies. He split 2013 between Class A Lakewood and Class A Advanced Clearwater. He hit .288/.362/.458 with 2 HR, 13 RBI, 11 R, 1 SB in 16 games at Lakewood and hit .246/.310/.363 with 4 HR, 29 RBI, 36 R, 4 SB in 68 games at Clearwater. He was originally drafted by the Rangers in the eighth round in 2010. Roof will be 25 on January 23.

The St Louis Cardinals selected shortstop Gregory Miclat from the Texas Rangers. He split 2013 between Rookie Arizona, Double A Frisco and Triple A Round Rock. He hit .462/.533/.538 with 0 HR, 2 RBI, 3 R, 2 SB in 4 games at Arizona, hit .200/.231/.200 with 0 HR, 0 RBI, 5 R, 0 SB in 5 games at Frisco and hit .238/.329/.279 with 0 HR, 26 RBI, 25 R, 10 SB in 79 games at Round Rock. He was originally drafted by the Orioles in the fifth round in 2008. He turned 26 on July 23.

The Houston Astros selected LHP Carlos Vazquez from the New York Mets. He pitched in 2013 at Class A Advanced St Lucie after starting the season in Mexico. He was 2-1, 4.09 ERA, 9 K, 1.73 WHIP, 1 SV in 11.0 IP over 9 games in Mexico and was 1-0, 2.29 ERA, 13 K, 0.92 WHIP in 19.2 IP over 10 games at St Lucie. He originally signed with the Mets in 2008 as an amateur free agent out of Mexico. Vazquez turned 22 on September 3rd.

The Miami Marlins selected outfielder Brady Shoemaker from the Chicago White Sox. He missed 2013 with a shoulder injury. He split 2012 between Class A Advanced Winston-Salem and Double A Birmingham. He hit .331/.422/.549 with 13 HR, 59 RBI, 61 R, 2 SB in 78 games at Winston-Salem and hit .254/.408/.392 with 4 HR, 26 RBI, 30 R, 2 SB in 56 games at Birmingham. He was originally drafted by the White Sox in the 19th round in 2009. Shoemaker turned 26 on May 10.

The Chicago White Sox selected catcher Omar Narvaez from the Tampa Bay Rays. He played in 2013 at Class A Hudson Valley. He hit .267/.311/.333 with 0 HR, 13 RBI, 13 R, 0 SB in 39 games. He originally signed with the Rays in 2008 as an amateur free agent out of Venezuela. Narvaez will be 22 on February 10.

The Minnesota Twins selected LHP James Fuller from the New York Mets. He split 2013 between Class A Advanced St Lucie and Double A Binghamton. He was 1-0, 0.84 ERA, 31 K, 0.97 WHIP in 32.0 IP over 16 games at St Lucie and was 3-2, 7.50 ERA, 27 K, 1.50 WHIP in 18.0 IP over 9 games at Binghamton. He was originally drafted by the Mets in the 21st round in 2008. Fuller turned 26 on June 1st.

The Toronto Blue Jays selected LHP Richard Bleier from the Texas Rangers. He split 2013 between Double A Frisco and Triple A Round Rock. He was 5-5, 3.18 ERA, 41 K, 1.19 WHIP, 4 SV in 62.1 IP over 34 games at Frisco and was 1-1, 3.79 ERA, 8 K, 1.58 WHIP in 19.0 IP over 8 games at Round Rock. He was originally drafted by the Rangers in the sixth round in 2008. Bleier turned 26 on April 16.

The Milwaukee Brewers selected third baseman Vincent Catricala from the Oakland Athletics. He had been traded to the Athletics in June 2013. Before the trade be played at Double A Jackson and hit .253/.318/.351 with 3 HR, 21 RBI, 23 R, 2 SB in 48 games. After the trade he played at Double A Midland and hit .221/.273/.312 with 4 HR, 26 RBI, 21 R, 3 SB in 61 games. He was originally drafted in the tenth round in 2009. Catricala turned 25 on October 31.

The San Diego Padres selected catcher Adolfo Reina from the Detroit Tigers. He split 2013 between Class A West Michigan and Class A Advanced Lakeland. He hit .196/.245/.293 with 3 HR, 22 RBI, 17 R, 1 SB in 55 games at West Michigan and hit .179/.220/.231 with 0 HR, 7 RBI, 0 R, 0 SB in 12 games at Lakeland. He originally signed with the Tigers in 2008 as an amateur free agent out of Panama. Reina will be 24 on January 22.

The Arizona Diamondbacks selected LHP Hector Hernandez from the St Louis Cardinals. He split 2013 between Class A Peoria and Class A Advanced Palm Beach. He was 5-3, 3.42 ERA, 60 K, 1.21 WHIP in 76.1 IP over 13 games at Peoria and was 3-3, 3.77 ERA, 28 K, 1.52 WHIP in 45.1 IP over 9 games at Palm Beach. He was originally drafted by the Cardinals in the tenth round in 2009. Hernandez will be 23 on February 20.

The Washington Nationals selected RHP Martires Arias from the New York Mets. He pitched in 2013 at Rookie Kingsport. He was 1-7, 5.81 ERA, 36 K, 1.50 WHIP in 52.2 IP over 12 games. He originally signed with the Mets in 2008 as an international free agent out of the Dominican Republic. Arias turned 23 on November 10.

The St Louis Cardinals selected third baseman Jesus Ustariz from the Detroit Tigers. He split 2013 between Rookie Gulf Coast and Class A Connecticut. He hit .302/.410/.481 with 4 HR, 21 RBI, 26 R, 5 SB in 42 games at Gulf Coast and hit .205/.326/.359 with 1 HR, 2 RBI, 8 R, 0 SB in 11 games at Connecticut. The Miami Marlins selected third baseman Tony Thompson from the Oakland Athletics. He played in 2013 at Class A Advanced Stockton. He hit .250/.322/.428 with 18 HR, 92 RBI, 58 R, 3 SB in 116 games. He was originally drafted by the Athletics in the sixth round in 2010. Thompson will be 25 on December 19.

The Toronto Blue Jays selected RHP Scott Shuman from the San Francisco Giants. He pitched in 2013 at Double A Richmond. He was 0-0, 9.51 ERA, 39 K, 2.41 WHIP in 23.2 IP over 28 games. He was originally drafted by the Rays in the 19th round in 2009. He was selected by the Giants in the 2012 Rule 5 draft. Shuman turned 25 on March 28.

The Pittsburgh Pirates selected Felipe Gonzalez from the New York Yankees. He pitched in 2013 at Rookie Gulf Coast. He was 4-1, 2.23 ERA, 45 K, 1.18 WHIP, 1 SV in 48.1 IP over 11 games. He originally signed with the Yankees in 2008 as an amateur free agent out of Mexico. Gonzalez turned 22 on August 15.
