Chris Carpenter retires

Chris Carpenter announced his retirement from playing baseball in November 2013. Carpenter was a RHP with 15 seasons MLB experience pitching with the Blue Jays (1997-2002) and Cardinals (2003-2012). He missed the 2003 season after shoulder surgery and also missed the 2013 season dealing with shoulder issues. For his MLB career he was 144-94, 3.76 ERA, 1697 K, 1.28 WHIP in 2219.1 IP over 350 games. 

He won the NL Cy Young in 2005 while going 21-5, 2.83 ERA, 213 K, 1.06 WHIP in 241.2 IP over 33 games. In 2009 he was 17-4, 2.24 ERA, 144 K, 1.01 WHIP in 192.2 IP over 28 games as he finished second in the NL Cy Young voting to Tim Lincecum of the San Francisco Giants. 

He was originally drafted by the Blue Jays with the 15th pick of the first round in 1993 out of Trinity High School in Manchester, NH. Carpenter was 38 when he retired with his birthday on April 27.
