Ryan Hanigan was traded by the Cincinnati Reds to the Tampa Bay Rays on December 3, 2013. The Arizona Diamondbacks also traded Heath Bell to the Rays as part of a three team deal. The Reds received David Holmberg from the Diamondbacks. The Diamondbacks received Justin Choate and a player to be named later from the Rays.
Hanigan is a catcher with seven seasons MLB experience playing all with the Reds. He split 2013 between Triple A Louisville while rehabbing and the Reds. He hit .375/.444/.375 with 0 HR, 2 RBI, 2 R, 0 SB in 3 games at Louisville and hit .198/.306/.261 with 2 HR, 21 RBI, 17 R, 0 SB in 75 games. He missed much of the season with an oblique injury. For his MLB career he has hit .262/.359/.343 with 20 HR, 138 RBI, 128 R, 0 SB in 474 games. Hanigan turned 33 on August 16.
RHP Bell has ten seasons MLB experience pitching with the Diamondbacks, Marlins, Padres and Mets. In 2013 he was 5-2, 4.11 ERA, 72 K, 1.37 WHIP, 15 SV in 69 games with the Diamondbacks. For his MLB career he is 37-31, 3.39 ERA, 625 K, 1.25 WHIP, 168 SV in 611.1 IP over 577 games. He originally signed with the Mets as an amateur free agent in 1998. Bell turned 36 on September 29.
LHP Holmberg split 2013 between Double A Mobile and the Diamondbacks. He was 5-8, 2.75 ERA, 116 K, 1.20 WHIP in 157.1 IP over 26 games at Mobile and was 0-0, 7.36 ERA, 0 K, 2.46 WHIP in 3.2 IP in one game with the Diamondbacks. He was originally drafted by the White Sox in the second round in 2009. Holmberg turned 22 on July 19.
RHP Choate pitched in 2013 at Class A Hudson Valley. He was 1-3, 2.88 ERA, 35 K, 1.33 WHIP, 6 SV in 40.2 IP over 15 games. He originally signed with the Rays on June 24, 2013 as a minor league free agent after going undrafted out of Stephen F Austin. Choate will be 23 on December 31.
