The 2013 season is behind us and I'm checking how picks 41 to 50 (which closed out the first round) of the 2010 draft did this season. Traditionally players drafted out of college advance faster than those drafted out of high school and pitchers usually advance faster than position players. Some players might also be traded to help their team get an established player that can help their team improve immediately.
The Toronto Blue Jays drafted RHP Asher Wojciechowski 41st out of The Citadel. He was traded to the Astros in 2012. He split 2013 between Double A Corpus Christi and Triple A Oklahoma City. He was 2-1, 2.08 ERA, 27 K, 0.92 WHIP, 1 SV in 26.0 IP over 6 games at Corpus Christi and was 9-7, 3.56 ERA, 104 K, 1.19 WHIP in 134.0 IP over 22 games at Oklahoma City.
The Tampa Bay Rays drafted outfielder Drew Vettleson 42nd out of Central Kitsap School in Silverdale, WA. He played in 2013 at Class A Advanced Charlotte. He hit .274/.331/.388 with 4 HR, 62 RBI, 50 R, 5 SB in 121 games.
The Seattle Mariners drafted RHP Taijuan Walker 43rd out of Yucaipa High School in Yucaipa, CA. He split 2013 between Double A Jackson, Triple A Tacoma and the Mariners. He was 4-7, 2.46 ERA, 96 K, 1.05 WHIP in 84.0 IP over 14 games at Jackson, was 5-3, 3.61 ERA, 64 K, 1.41 WHIP in 57.1 IP over 11 games at Tacoma and was 1-0, 3.60 ERA, 12 K, 1.00 WHIP in 15.0 IP over 3 games with the Mariners.
The Detroit Tigers drafted third baseman Nick Castellanos 44th out of Archbishop McCarthy High School in Southwest Ranches, FL. He split 2013 between Triple A Toledo and the Tigers. He hit .276/.343/.450 with 18 HR, 76 RBI, 81 R, 4 SB in 134 games at Toledo and hit .278/.278/.278 with 0 HR, 0 RBI, 1 R, 0 SB in 11 games with the Tigers.
The Texas Rangers drafted RHP Luke Jackson 45th out of Calvary Christian Academy in Fort Lauderdale, FL. He split 2013 between Class A Advanced Myrtle Beach and Double A Frisco. He was 9-4, 2.41 ERA, 104 K, 1.25 WHIP in 101.0 IP over 19 games at Myrtle Beach and was 2-0, 0.67 ERA, 30 K, 0.93 WHIP in 27.0 IP over 6 games at Frisco.
The St Louis Cardinals drafted RHP Seth Blair 46th out of Arizona State. He pitched in 2013 at Double A Springfield. He was 3-9, 5.07 ERA, 117 K, 1.52 WHIP in 129.2 IP over 24 games.
The Colorado Rockies drafted RHP Peter Tago 47th out of Dana Hills High School in Dana Point, CA. He split 2013 between Rookie Grand Junction and Class A Tri-City. He was 3-5, 7.14 ERA, 38 K, 1.97 WHIP in 58.0 IP over 16 games at Grand Junction and was 0-2, 9.00 ERA, 6 K, 1.67 WHIP in 9.0 IP over 2 games at Tri-City.
The Detroit Tigers drafted RHP Chance Ruffin 48th out of Texas. He was traded to the Mariners in 2011. He split 2013 between Double A Jackson, Triple A Tacoma, the Tigers and the Mariners. He was 4-4, 3.90 ERA, 57 K, 1.27 WHIP in 83.0 IP over 16 games at Jackson, was 1-2, 3.94 ERA, 25 K, 1.15 WHIP in 29.2 IP over 15 games at Tacoma and was 0-2, 8.38 ERA, 15 K, 1.97 WHIP in 9.2 IP over 9 games with the Mariners.
The Texas Rangers drafted third baseman Mike Olt 49th out of Connecticut. He split 2013 between Double A Frisco, Triple A Round Rock and Triple A Iowa after he was traded to the Cubs. He hit .333/.333/.750 with 1 HR, 2 RBI, 1 R, 0 SB in 3 games at Frisco, hit .213/.317/.422 with 11 HR, 32 RBI, 37 R, 0 SB in 65 games at Round Rock and hit .168/.276/.275 with 3 HR, 8 RBI, 11 R, 0 SB in 39 games at Iowa.
The St Louis Cardinals drafted RHP Tyrell Jenkins 50th out of Henderson High School in Henderson, TX. He split 2013 between Class A Peoria and Class A Advanced Palm Beach. He was 4-4, 4.74 ERA, 34 K, 1.52 WHIP in 49.1 IP over 10 games at Peoria and was 0-0, 4.50 ERA, 6 K, 1.40 WHIP in 10.0 IP over 3 games at Palm Beach.
