The 2013 season is behind us and I'm checking how picks 33 to 40 of the 2009 draft did this season. Traditionally players drafted out of college advance faster than those drafted out of high school and pitchers usually advance faster than position players. Some players might also be traded to help their team get an established player that can help their team improve immediately.
The Seattle Mariners drafted catcher Steven Baron 33rd out of John A. Ferguson School in Miami, FL. He played in 2013 at Class A Advanced High Desert. He hit .208/.247/.338 with 5 HR, 47 RBI, 31 R, 7 SB in 86 games.
The Colorado Rockies drafted LHP Rex Brothers 34th out of Lipscomb University. He pitched in 2013 with the Rockies. He was 2-1, 1.74 ERA, 76 K, 1.29 WHIP, 19 SV in 67.1 IP over 72 games.
The Arizona Diamondbacks drafted third baseman Matthew Davidson 35th out of Yucaipa High School in Yucaipa, CA. He split 2013 between Triple A Reno and the Diamondbacks. He hit .280/.350/.481 with 17 HR, 74 RBI, 55 R, 1 SB in 115 games at Reno and hit .237/.333/.434 with 3 HR, 12 RBI, 8 R, 0 SB in 31 games with the Diamondbacks. He was traded to the White Sox in December.
The Los Angeles Dodgers drafted LHP Aaron Miller 36th out of Baylor. He split 2013 between Double A Chattanooga and Class A Great Lakes. He converted be an outfielder mid season. He was 0-2, 6.00 ERA, 26 K, 1.75 WHIP in 24.0 IP over 11 games at Chattanooga. He hit .000/.167/.000 with 0 HR, 1 RBI, 0 R, 0 SB in 10 games at Chattanooga and hit .266/.332/.419 with 9 HR, 47 RBI, 44 R, 1 SB in 78 games at Great Lakes.
The Toronto Blue Jays drafted LHP James Paxton 37th out of Kentucky. He tried to return to Kentucky for his senior season but left the team due to issues with the NCAA. He was drafted by the Seattle Mariners in the fourth round in 2010. He split 2013 between Triple A Tacoma and the Mariners. He was 8-11, 4.45 ERA, 131 K, 1.48 WHIP in 145.2 IP over 28 games at Tacoma and was 3-0, 1.50 ERA, 21 K, 0.92 WHIP in 24.0 IP over 4 games with the Mariners.
The Chicago White Sox drafted catcher Joshua Phegley 38th out of Indiana. He split 2013 between Triple A Charlotte and the White Sox. He hit .316/.368/.597 with 15 HR, 41 RBI, 39 R, 1 SB in 61 games at Charlotte and hit .206/.223/.299 with 4 HR, 22 RBI, 14 RBI, 2 SB in 65 games.
The Milwaukee Brewers drafted outfielder Kentrail Davis 39th out of Tennessee. He split 2013 between Double A Huntsville and Triple A Nashville. He hit .266/.372/.405 with 5 HR, 33 RBI, 51 R, 18 SB in 88 games at Huntsville and hit .270/.353/.367 with 2 HR, 14 RBI, 27 R, 8 SB in 49 games at Nashville.
The Los Angeles Angels drafted LHP Tyler Skaggs 40th out of Santa Monica High School in Santa Monica, CA. He was traded to the Diamondbacks in 2010. He split 2013 between Class A Advanced Visalia, Triple A Reno and the Diamondbacks. He was 0-0, 4.76 ERA, 8 K, 2.29 WHIP in 5.2 IP in 1 game at Visalia, was 6-10, 4.59 ERA, 107 K, 1.47 WHIP in 104.0 IP over 19 games at Reno and was 2-3, 5.12 ERA, 36 K, 1.37 WHIP in 38.2 IP over 7 games with the Diamondbacks. He was traded to the Angels in December.
