2013 Where are they now 2009 MLB draft picks 41 to 49

The 2013 season is behind us and I'm checking how picks 41 to 49 (which closed out the first round) of the 2009 draft did this season. Traditionally players drafted out of college advance faster than those drafted out of high school and pitchers usually advance faster than position players. Some players might also be traded to help their team get an established player that can help their team improve immediately.

The Arizona Diamondbacks drafted shortstop Christopher Owings 41st out of Gilbert High School in Gilbert, SC. He split 2013 between Triple A Reno and the Diamondbacks. He hit .330/.359/.482 with 12 HR, 81 RBI, 104 R, 20 SB in 125 games at Reno and hit .291/.361/.382 with 0 HR, 5 RBI, 5 R, 2 SB in 20 games with the Diamondbacks.

The Los Angeles Angels drafted RHP Garrett Richards 42nd out of Oklahoma. He pitched in 2013 with the Angels. He was 7-8, 4.16 ERA, 101 K, 1.35 WHIP, 1 SV in 145.0 IP over 47 games.

The Cincinnati Reds drafted RHP Bradley Boxberger 43rd out of Southern Cal. He was traded to the Padres in December 2011. He split 2013 between Triple A Tucson and the Padres. He was 2-4, 3.61 ERA, 89 K, 1.20 WHIP, 5 SV in 57.1 IP over 42 games at Tucson and was 0-1, 2.86 ERA, 24 K, 1.46 WHIP, 1 SV in 22.0 IP over 18 games with the Padres.

The Texas Rangers drafted RHP Tanner Scheppers 44th out of the St Paul Saints of the Independent League. He had been drafted by the Pirates in the second round in 2008 out of Fresno State but did not sign. He pitched in 2013 with the Rangers. He was 6-2, 1.88 ERA, 59 K, 1.07 WHIP, 1 SV in 76.2 IP over 76 games.

The Arizona Diamondbacks drafted LHP Michael Belfiore 45th out of Boston College. He was traded to the Orioles in 2012. He split 2013 between Triple A Norfolk and the Orioles. He was 2-1, 3.18 ERA, 82 K, 1.44 WHIP, 1 SV in 76.1 IP over 37 games at Norfolk and was 0-0, 13.50 ERA, 0 K, 3.00 WHIP in 1.1 IP in 1 game with the Orioles. 

The Minnesota Twins drafted LHP Matthew Bashore 46th out of Indiana. He was released by the Twins after the 2011 season and signed with the Yankees. He did not pitch in 2013 after being released by the Yankees in March.

The Milwaukee Brewers drafted RHP Kyle Heckathorn 47th out of Kennesaw State.  He pitched 2013 at Triple A Nashville. He was 8-3, 3.60 ERA, 46 K, 1.25 WHIP, 1 SV in 65.0 IP over 48 games.

The Los Angeles Angels drafted LHP Tyler Kehrer 48th out of Eastern Illinois. He had been selected by the Marlins in the 2012 Rule 5 draft but they released him in April 2013.

The Pittsburgh Pirates drafted RHP Victor Black 49th out of Dallas Baptist. He split 2013 between Triple A Indianapolis, the Pirates and the Mets after being traded in August. He was 5-3, 2.51 ERA, 63 K, 1.05 WHIP, 17 SV in 46.2 IP over 38 games at Indianapolis, was 0-0, 4.50 ERA, 3 K, 2.00 WHIP in 4.0 IP over 3 games with the Pirates and was 3-0, 3.46 ERA, 12 K, 1.15 WHIP, 1 SV in 13.0 IP over 15 games with the Mets.
