2012 Rule 5 Draft Triple A Phase

After the Major League phase of the Rule 5 draft there is also a minor league draft. One part is the Triple A phase where teams have the option to draft players from Double A level teams or lower to play for their Triple A teams. The cost is $12,000 for each player.

The Houston Astros selected outfielder Michael Burgess from the Chicago Cubs. He played 2012 at Double A Tennessee and hit .259/.350/.422 with 10 HR, 43 RBI, 41 R, 0 SB in 119 games. He was originally drafted by the Nationals with the 49th pick of the first round in 2007. Burgess turned 24 on October 20.

The Minnesota Twins selected third baseman Mark Sobolewski from the Toronto Blue Jays. He split 2012 between Double A New Hampshire and Triple A Las Vegas and hit .262/.295/.457 with 18 HR, 51 RBI, 57 R, 2 SB in 94 games at New Hampshire and hit .188/.244/.313 with 2 HR, 8 RBI, 12 R, 1 SB in 23 games at Las Vegas. He was originally drafted by the Blue Jays in the fourth round in 2008. Sobolewski will be 26 on December 24.

The Miami Marlins selected LHP Tyler Kehrer from the Los Angeles Angels. He pitched 2012 at Class A Advanced Inland Empire and was 2-3 with a 5.82 ERA, 37 K, 2.02 WHIP in 38.2 IP over 33 games. He was originally drafted by the Angels with the 48th pick of the first round in 2009. Kehrer will be 25 on March 23.

The Boston Red Sox selected LHP Jack McGeary from the Washington Nationals. He had Tommy John surgery in 2010 and pitched with the Rookie Gulf Coast team and Class A Auburn. He was 0-0 with a 5.40 ERA, 1 K, 3.00 WHIP in 1.2 IP over 2 games at Rookie and was 0-1 with a 7.04 ERA, 5 K, 1.96 WHIP in 7.2 IP over 6 games at Auburn. He was originally drafted by the Nationals in the sixth round in 2007. McGeary will be 24 on March 19.

The Toronto Blue Jays selected outfielder Sawyer Carroll from the San Diego Padres. He played 2012 at Triple A Tuscon and hit .263/.337/.401 with 8 HR, 56 RBI, 46 R, 10 SB in 112 games. He was originally drafted by the Padres in the third round in 2008. Carroll turned 26 on May 9th.

The Seattle Mariners selected second baseman Eric Farris from the Milwaukee Brewers. He played 2012 at Triple A Nashville and hit .286/.329/.377 with 7 HR, 31 RBI, 63 R, 35 SB in 131 games. He was originally drafted by the Brewers in the fourth round in 2007. Farris will be 27 on March 3rd.

The San Diego Padres selected third baseman Diego Goris from the Kansas City Royals. He split 2012 between the Rookie teams in Arizona and Idaho Falls and hit .425/.442/.688 with 3 HR, 19 RBI, 14 R, 0 SB in 18 games at Arizona and hit .286/.297/.545 with 10 HR, 32 RBI, 27 R, 0 SB in 40 games at Idaho Falls. He originally signed with the Pirates as an amateur free agent in 2008 out of the Dominican Republic. He turned 22 on December 8th.

The Pittsburgh Pirates selected RHP Ethan Hollingsworth from the Kansas City Royals. He split 2012 between Double A Northwest Arkansas and Triple A Omaha and was 3-8 with a 4.17 ERA, 48 K, 1.36 WHIP, 2 SV in 73.1 IP over 23 games at Northwest Arkansas and was 2-3 with a 6.44 ERA, 18 K, 1.87 WHIP in 29.1 IP over 11 games at Omaha. He was originally drafted by the Rockies in the fourth round in 2008. Hollingsworth turned 25 on May 4th.

The Philadelphia Phillies selected LHP Brendan Lafferty from the Kansas City Royals. He pitched 2012 at Double A Northwest Arkansas and was 1-1 with a 4.77 ERA, 71 K, 1.57 WHIP, 1 SV in 60.1 IP over 43 games. He was originally drafted by the Royals in the 18th round in 2009. Lafferty turned 26 on May 27.

The Los Angeles Dodgers selected 2B\3B Elevys Gonzalez from the Pittsburgh Pirates. He split 2012 between Class A Advanced Bradenton and Double A Altoona and hit .216/.335/.372 with 4 HR, 20 RBI, 17 R, 3 SB in 45 games at Bradenton and hit .196/.274/.291 with 2 HR, 15 RBI, 10 R, 1 SB in 50 games at Altoona. He was originally signed by the Pirates as an amateur free agent in 2008 out of Venezuela. Gonzalez turned 23 on October 23.

The St Louis Cardinals selected third baseman Matt Cerda from the Chicago Cubs. He split 2012 between Class A Advanced Daytona and Double A Tennessee and hit .165/.314/.200 with 0 HR, 9 RBI, 13 R, 3 SB in 26 games at Daytona and hit .266/.394/.355 with 3 HR, 15 RBI, 38 R, 4 SB in 85 games at Tennessee. He was originally drafted by the Cubs in the fourth round in 2008. Cerda turned 22 on June 20.

The Detroit Tigers selected outfielder Eliezer Mesa from the Oakland Athletics. He split 2012 between Class A Burlington, Class A Advanced Stockton and Double A Midland. He hit .294/.326/.412 with 4 HR, 33 RBI, 36 R, 20 SB in 70 games at Burlington, hit .130/.130/.174 with 0 HR, 3 RBI, 4 R, 4 SB in 13 games at Stockton and hit .179/.186/.268 with 0 HR, 7 RBI, 4 R, 1 SB in 18 games at Midland. He originally signed with the Rockies as an amateur free agent in 2007 out of the Dominican Republic. Mesa turned 24 on November 24.

The Los Angeles Angels selected first baseman Robert Widlansky from the Baltimore Orioles. He played 2012 at Double A Bowie and hit .316/.404/.446 with 8 HR, 83 RBI, 71 R, 11 SB in 128 games. He was originally drafted by the Orioles in the 11th round in 2007. Widlansky turned 28 on November 6th.

The Baltimore Orioles selected RHP Tom Boleska from the Pittsburgh Pirates. He pitched 2012 with Fargo-Morehead in the independent league and was 2-1 with a 1.76 ERA, 58 K, 1.04 WHIP, 29 SV in 46.0 IP over 46 games. He had split 2011 between the Pirates Double A Altoona and Edmonton in the independent league and was 1-1 with a 5.40 ERA, 11 K, 1.56 WHIP in 16.2 IP over 12 games at Altoona and was 3-3 with a 2.11 ERA, 56 K, 0.96 WHIP, 11 SV in 47.0 IP over 33 games at Edmonton. He was originally drafted by the Pirates in the 35th round in 2007. Boleska turned 26 on July 30.

The Texas Rangers selected third baseman Marquez Smith from the Cincinnati Reds. He split 2012 between Camden in the independent league, Campeche in the Mexican League and the Red Sox Double A Portland. He hit .363/.422/.593 with 3 HR, 20 RBI, 20 R, 2 SB in 23 games at Camden, hit .261/.358/.413 with 1 HR, 6 RBI, 6 R, 0 SB in 12 games at Campeche and hit .293/.350/.464 with 8 HR, 37 RBI, 43 R, 1 SB in 71 games at Portland. He signed with the Reds after the season in November. He was originally drafted by the Cubs in the eighth round in 2007. Smith will be 28 on March 20.

The Oakland Athletics selected third baseman Thomas Mendonca from the Texas Rangers. He split 2012 between Double A Frisco and Triple A Round Rock and hit .277/.342/.455 with 5 HR, 20 RBI, 13 R, 0 SB in 28 games at Frisco and hit .208/.249/.329 with 7 HR, 31 RBI, 27 R, 0 SB in 63 games at Round Rock. He was originally drafted by the Rangers in the second round in 2009. Mendonca turned 24 on April 24.

The San Francisco Giants selected RHP Scott Shuman from the Tampa Bay Rays. He pitched 2012 at Double A Montgomery and was 0-1 with a 8.83 ERA, 54 K, 2.28 WHIP in 34.2 IP over 29 games. He was originally drafted by the Rays in the 19th round in 2009. Shuman will be 25 on March 28.

The Cincinnati Reds selected LHP Ryan Dennick from the Kansas City Royals. He split 2012 between Class A Advanced Wilmington and Double A Northwest Arkansas and was 2-1 with a 4.57 ERA, 17 K, 1.48 WHIP in 21.2 IP over 6 games at Wilmington and was 6-5 with a 4.62 ERA, 72 K, 1.28 WHIP, 4 SV in 74.0 IP over 30 games at Northwest Arkansas. He was originally drafted by the Royals in the 22nd round. Dennick will be 26 on January 10.

The Houston Astros selected RHP Cameron Lamb from the San Francisco Giants. He split 2012 between the Giants Rookie team in Arizona and Class A Salem-Keizer. He was 0-0 with a 0.00 ERA, 3 K, 0.60 WHIP in 3.1 IP over 3 games at Arizona and was 2-1 with a 2.42 ERA, 16 K, 1.03 WHIP in 22.1 IP over 9 games at Salem-Keizer. He was originally signed by the Giants as an amateur free agent in 2007 out of Australia. Lamb turned 23 on May 29.

The Boston Red Sox selected RHP Jon Bachanov from the Chicago White Sox. He split 2012 between Class A Advanced Winston-Salem and Double A Birmingham and was 7-2 with a 3.95 ERA, 55 K, 1.44 WHIP in 66.0 IP over 23 games at Winston-Salem and was 0-1 with a 11.42 ERA, 9 K, 3.11 WHIP in 8.2 IP over 9 games at Birmingham. He was originally drafted by the Angels with the 58th pick of the first round in 2007. Bachanov will be 24 on January 30.

The Toronto Blue Jays selected RHP Alvido Jimenez from the Chicago Cubs. He pitched 2012 for the Rookie team in Arizona and was 3-4 with a 2.64 ERA, 30 K, 0.85 WHIP, 1 SV in 30.2 IP over 15 games. He originally signed with the Cubs as an amateur free agent in 2009 out of the Dominican Republic. Jimenez turned 21 on November 22.

The San Diego Padres selected RHP Federico Castaneda from the Kansas City Royals. He pitched in 2012 for Mexico City in the Mexican League and was 2-4 with a 5.71 ERA, 52 K, 1.36 WHIP, 1 SV in 52.0 IP over 51 games. He had split in 2011 between the Royals Triple A Omaha and Mexico City and was 0-0 with a 0.00 ERA, 3 K, 0.33 WHIP in 3.0 IP over 2 games at Omaha and was 7-3 with a 5.74 ERA, 44 K, 1.52 WHIP in 53.1 IP over 38 games at Mexico City. He originally signed with the Royals as an amateur free agent in 2008 out of Mexico. Castaneda will be 29 on January 26.

The Los Angeles Dodgers selected RHP Hector Nelo from the Washington Nationals. He pitched 2012 at Double A Harrisburg and was 1-6 with a 2.73 ERA, 63 K, 1.39 WHIP, 16 SV in 52.2 IP over 47 games. He was originally drafted by the Rangers in the 15th round in 2007. Nelo turned 26 on November 5th.

The St Louis Cardinals selected LHP Jay Voss from the Detroit Tigers. He pitched 2012 at Double A Erie after returning from Tommy John surgery. He was 0-3 with a 6.10 ERA, 8 K, 2.03 WHIP in 10.1 IP over 3 games. He was originally drafted by the Marlins in the eighth round in 2007. Voss turned 25 on April 22.

The Oakland Athletics selected catcher Steven Hill from the St Louis Cardinals. He split 2012 between Triple A Memphis and the Cardinals and hit .266/.326/.488 with 17 HR, 52 RBI, 52 R, 0 SB in 87 games at Memphis and hit .200/.200/.300 with 0 HR, 0 RBI, 1 R, 0 SB in 9 games at St Louis. He was originally drafted by the Cardinals in the 13th round in 2007. Hill will be 28 on March 14.

The Cincinnati Reds selected second baseman Michael Gilmartin from the Oakland Athletics. He played 2012 at Class A Advanced Stockton and hit .256/.339/.360 with 9 HR, 52 RBI, 58 R, 4 SB in 118 games. He was originally drafted by the Athletics in the 27th round in 2009. Gilmartin turned 25 on July 14.

The Toronto Blue Jays selected LHP Efrain Nieves from the Detroit Tigers. He pitched 2012 at Class A Connecticut and was 4-1 with a 2.79 ERA, 42 K, 0.86 WHIP, 3 SV in 42.0 IP over 21 games. He was originally drafted by the Brewers in the seventh round in 2007. Nieves turned 23 on November 15.
