James Shields traded to Royals

James Shields was traded by the Tampa Bay Rays to the Kansas City Royals on December 9, 2012 along with Wade Davis and a player to be named later. In exchange the Rays received Wil Myers, Jake Odorizzi, Mike Montgomery and Patrick Leonard. 

RHP Shields has seven seasons MLB experience pitching all with the Rays. In 2012 he was 15-10 with a 3.52 ERA, 223 K, 1.17 WHIP in 227.2 IP over 33 games. For his MLB career he is 87-73 with a 3.89 ERA, 1250 K, 1.22 WHIP in 1454.2 IP over 218 games. He was originally drafted by the Rays in the 16th round in 2000. Shields will be 31 on December 20. 

RHP Davis has four seasons MLB experience all with the Rays. In 2012 he was 3-0 with a 2.43 ERA, 87 K, 1.09 WHIP in 70.1 IP over 54 games. For his MLB career he is 28-22 with a 3.94 ERA, 341 K, 1.31 WHIP in 458.2 IP over 118 games. He was originally drafted by the Rays in the third round in 2004. Davis turned 27 on September 7th. 

Myers is a 3B/OF who split 2012 in the Kansas City Royals farm system between Double A Northwest Arkansas and Triple A Omaha. He hit .343/.414/.731 with 13 HR, 30 RBI, 32 R, 4 SB in 35 games with Northwest Arkansas and hit .304/.378/.554 with 24 HR, 79 RBI, 66 R, 2 SB in 99 games with Omaha. That performance earned him multiple minor league player of the year honors. He was originally drafted by the Royals in the third round in 2009. Myers will be 22 on December 10.

RHP Odorizzi split 2012 between Double A Northwest Arkansas, Triple A Omaha and Kansas City. He was 4-2 with a 3.32 ERA, 47 K, 0.97 WHIP in 38.0 IP over 7 games at Northwest Arkansas, was 11-3 with a 2.93 ERA, 88 K, 1.35 WHIP in 107.1 IP over 19 games at Omaha and was 0-1 with a 4.91 ERA, 4 K, 1.64 WHIP in 7.1 IP over 2 games at Kansas City. He was originally drafted by the Brewers with the 32nd pick of the first round in 2008. Odorizzi will be 23 on March 27.

LHP Montgomery split 2012 between Double A Northwest Arkansas and Triple A Omaha. He was 2-6 with a 6.67 ERA, 44 K, 1.55 WHIP in 58.0 IP over 10 games with Northwest Arkansas and was 3-6 with a 5.69 ERA, 67 K, 1.67 WHIP in 91.2 IP over 17 games at Omaha. He was originally drafted by the Royals with the 36th pick of the first round in 2008. Montgomery turned 23 on July 1st.

Leonard is a third baseman who played 2012 with the Royals Rookie team at Burlington. He hit .251/.340/.494 with 14 HR, 46 RBI, 37 R, 6 SB in 62 games. He was originally drafted by the Royals in the fifth round in 2011. Leonard turned 20 on Ocotber 20.
