Yunel Escobar Traded to Rays

Yunel Escobar was traded by the Miami Marlins to the Tampa Bay Rays on December 4, 2012. In exchange the Marlins received Derek Dietrich.

Escobar is a shortstop with 6 seasons MLB experience playing with the Blue Jays and Braves. He went to Miami as part of the 12 player deal in November. In 2012 he hit .253/.300/.344 with 9 HR, 51 RBI, 58 R, 5 SB in 145 games with Toronto. For his MLB career he has hit .282/.353/.390 with 53 HR, 298 RBI, 409 R, 26 SB in 784 games. He was originally drafted by the Braves in the second round in 2005. Escobar turned 30 on November 2nd.

Dietrich is a SS/2B who split 2012 between the Rays Class A Advanced team Charlotte and Double A team Montgomery. He hit .282/.343/.468 with 10 HR, 58 RBI, 49 R, 4 SB in 98 games at Charlotte and hit .271/.324/.429 with 4 HR, 17 RBI, 22 R, 0 SB in 34 games at Montgomery. He was originally drafted by the Rays in the second round in 2010. Dietrich turned 23 on July 18.
