Willie J Wells was inducted into the MLB Hall of Fame class of 1997 along with Nellie Fox, Tommy Lasorda and Phil Niekro. Wells was inducted by the Veteran's Committee and had been a player in the Negro Leagues. Wells was a shortstop who played for the St Louis Stars (1924-1931), Detroit Wolves (1932), Homestead Grays (1932, 1937), Kansas City Monarchs (1932), Chicago American Giants (1929, 1933-1935), Newark Eagles (1936-1939, 1942, 1945), Birmingham Black Barons (1941), New York Black Yankees (1945-1946), Baltimore Elite Giants (1946), Indianapolis Clowns (1947) and Memphis Red Sox (1948). Although stats are incomplete he is credited for hitting .320/.380/.519 with 138 HR, 399 RBI, 644 R, 107 SB. Wells held the Negro League single season home run record with 27 in 1926.
He also served as manager for the Newark Eagles (1942, 1945) and Indianapolis Clowns (1947).
