Philip H Niekro was inducted into the MLB Hall of Fame class of 1997 along with Nellie Fox, Tommy Lasorda and Willie Wells. Niekro was a RHP with 24 seasons MLB experience pitching with the Milwaukee Braves (1964-1965), Atlanta Braves (1966-1983, 1987), New York Yankees (1984-1985), Cleveland Indians (1986-1987) and Toronto Blue Jays (1987). For his MLB career he was 318-274 with a 3.35 ERA, 3342 K, 1.27 WHIP, 29 SV, 245 complete games, 45 shut outs in 5404.0 IP over 864 games.
I believe his three best seasons were 1974 when he was 20-13 with a 2.38 ERA, 195 K, 1.11 WHIP, 1 SV, 18 complete games, 6 shut outs in 302.1 IP over 41 games, 1969 when he was 23-13 with a 2.56 ERA, 193 K, 1.03 WHIP, 1 SV, 21 complete games, 4 shut outs in 284.1 IP over 40 games and 1982 when he was 17-4 with a 3.61 ERA, 144 K, 1.27 WHIP, 4 complete games, 2 shut outs in 35 games.
Niekro led the National League in wins in 1974 and 1979 (21). He led the NL in ERA in 1967 (1.87). He led the NL in strikeouts in 1977 (262).
He was an All Star five times (1969, 1975, 1978, 1982, 1984). He won five Gold Gloves (1978-1980, 1982-1983).
He pitched a no hitter on August 5, 1973 against the San Diego Padres.
