Lynn Nolan Ryan was inducted into the MLB Hall of Fame class of 1999 along with George Brett, Orlando Cepeda, Nestor Chylak, Frank Selee, Smokey Joe Williams and Robin Yount. Ryan was a RHP with 27 seasons MLB experience pitching with the New York Mets (1966, 1968-1971), California Angels (1972-1979), Houston Astros (1980-1988) and Texas Rangers (1989-1993). For his MLB career he was 324-292 with a 3.19 ERA, 5714 K, 1.247 WHIP, 3 SV, 222 complete games, 61 shut outs in 5386.0 IP over 807 games.
I believe his three best seasons were 1973 when he was 21-16 with a 2.87 ERA, 383 K, 1.23 WHIP, 1 SV, 26 complete games, 4 shut outs in 326.0 IP over 41 games, 1974 when he was 22-16 with a 2.89 ERA, 367 K, 1.27 WHIP, 26 complete games, 3 shut outs in 332.2 IP over 42 games and 1977 when he was 19-16 with a 2.77 ERA, 341 K, 1.34 WHIP, 22 complete games, 4 shut outs in 299.0 IP over 37 games.
Ryan led the American League in strikeouts nine times in 1972 (329), 1973, 1974, 1976 (327), 1977, 1978 (260), 1979 (223), 1989 (301) and 1990 (232). He led the AL in shut outs in 1972 (9), 1976 (7) and 1979 (5). He led the National League in ERA in 1981 (1.69) and 1987 (2.76). He led the NL in strikeouts in 1987 (270) and 1988 (228).
He was an All Star eight times (1972-1973, 1975, 1977, 1979, 1981, 1985, 1989). He pitched seven no hitters: May 5, 1973 against the Kansas City Royals, July 15, 1973 against the Detroit Tigers, September 28, 1974 against the Minnesota Twins, June 1, 1975 against the Baltimore Orioles, September 26, 1981 against the Los Angeles Dodgers, June 11, 1990 against the Oakland Athletics and May 1, 1991 against the Toronto Blue Jays. He holds the MLB career strikeout record. Ryan won the World Series Championship with the Mets in 1969.
