Leland S (Lee) MacPhail was inducted into the MLB Hall of Fame class of 1998 along with George Davis, Larry Doby, Bullet Rogan and Don Sutton. MacPhail was inducted by the Veteran's Committe as an executive and pioneer. His father Larry MacPhail was co-owner of the New York Yankees and young MacPhail got his start working in the Yankees farm system and worked his way up to farm system director (1948-1958). He moved over to the Baltimore Orioles as their General Manager and president (1958-1965). MacPhail returned to the Yankees as General Manager (1967-1973).
Then MacPhail served as American League president (1974-1984). During his tenure as American League president he over saw expansion in 1977 with the addition of the Seattle Mariners and Toronto Blue Jays. He also played a pivotal role in helping reach a settlement to end the 1981 baseball strike.
