Harold (Hal) Newhouser was inducted into the MLB Hall of Fame class of 1992 along with Rollie Fingers, William Newhouser and Tom Seaver. Newhouser was a LHP with 17 seasons MLB experience pitching with the Detroit Tigers (1939-1953) and Cleveland Indians (1954-1955). For his MLB career he was 207-150 with a 3.06 ERA, 1796 K, 1.31 WHIP, 26 SV, 212 complete games, 33 shut outs in 2993.0 IP over 488 games.
I believe his three best seasons were 1944 when he was 29-9 with a 2.22 ERA, 187 K, 1.17 WHIP, 2 SV, 25 complete games, 6 shut outs in 312.1 IP over 47 games, 1945 when he was 25-9 with a 1.81 ERA, 212 K, 1.11 WHIP, 2 SV, 29 complete games, 8 shut outs in 313.1 IP over 40 games and 1946 when he was 26-9 with a 1.94 ERA, 275 K, 1.07 WHIP, 29 complete games, 6 shut outs in 292.2 IP over 37 games.
Newhouser led the American League in wins in 1944, 1945, 1946 and 1948 (21). He led the AL in ERA in 1945 and 1946. He led the AL in strikeouts in 1944 and 1945 and in shut outs in 1945.
He was an All Star seven times (1942-1948). Newhouser was the American League MVP in 1944 and 1945 and was second in MVP voting in 1946. He won the World Series Championship with the Tigers in 1945.
