Here is my sixth Two Major One Minor segment of 2015. This is my fifth year of doing this series where I feature two Major League players and one minor league player each week. This week I am featuring Nate Karns, Francisco Liriano and Gabriel Arias.
RHP Karns of the Tampa Bay Rays is off to an impressive start in his first full season. The Rays pitching pipeline had produced plenty of talent when they traded for him before the 2014 season. They were enticed by his power arm that had K/9 rates of 11.5 in 2012 and 10.5 in 2013 as he rose through the minors. This season he is 3-1, 3.77 ERA, 44 K, 1.17 WHIP, .196 BAA in 45.1 IP over 8 games. He was originally drafted by the Nationals in the 12th round in 2009 before he was traded to the Rays in a 3 for 1 swap. Karns turned 27 on November 25.
LHP Liriano is in his third season with the Pittsburgh Pirates after half a dozen in the American League. He thrives in the NL and signs are he may be off to his best season yet. This season he is 1-3, 2.96 ERA, 50 K, 1.01 WHIP, .168 BAA in 45.2 IP over 7 games. His 9.9 K/9 rate is the best since he returned from Tommy John surgery in 2008. He originally signed with the Giants in 2000 as an amateur free agent out of the Dominican Republic. Liriano will be 32 on October 26.
LHP Boyd is have a stellar season at Double A New Hampshire of the Toronto Blue Jays. He is 3-1, 1.02 ERA, 48 K, 0.88 WHIP, .173 BAA in 44.1 IP over 8 games. His 9.7 K/9 rate is matching his average over his minor league career. Plus his BB/9 (2.2), HR/9 (0.5) and H/9 (7.2) career minor rates are all pretty good also. He was originally drafted by the Blue Jays in the sixth round in 2013. Boyd turned 24 on February 2nd.
