Here is my 12th installment of College Spotlight for 2015. This week I am looking at David Thompson of Miami (FL) and Bubba Derby of San Diego State.
Thompson is a junior third baseman out of Westminister Christian High School in Miami, FL. He is one of the top power hitters in the nation as he leads in home runs and RBI while being in the top 10 in total bases and slugging percentage. This season he is hitting .336/.442/.697 with 19 HR, 78 RBI, 52 R, 1 SB in 55 games. Last season he hit .278/.368/.352 with 0 HR, 15 RBI, 15 R, 0 SB in 30 games. The Hurricanes are 42-13 and are projected to host a regional in the national tournament.
Derby is a junior RHP out of LaSalle High School in Monrovia, CA. He is in the top 5 nationally in strikeouts and K/9 rate (12.12). This season he is 7-3, 3.26 ERA, 119 K, 1.21 WHIP, .238 BAA in 88.1 IP over 14 games. Last season he was 8-4, 3.08 ERA, 100 K, 1.28 WHIP, .244 BAA, 1 SV in 105.1 IP over 17 games. The Aztecs are 35-20 and with an RPI of 92 are a long shot to make the tournament.
