Welington Castillo traded to Mariners

Welington Castillo was traded by the Chicago Cubs to the Seattle Mariners on May 19, 2015. The Cubs in exchange received Yoervis Medina.

Castillo is a catcher who was hitting .163/.234/.349 with 2 HR, 5 RBI, 5 R, 0 SB in 24 games. Over six MLB seasons with the Mariners and Cubs he has hit .253/.320/.397 with 29 HR, 111 RBI, 95 R, 2 SB in 312 games. He originally signed with the Cubs in 2004 as an amateur free agent out of the Dominican Republic. Castillo turned 28 on April 24.

RHP Medina had split 2015 between Triple A Tacoma and the Mariners. He was 1-0, 1.59 ERA, 4 K, 0.35 WHIP, .059 BAA, 1 SV in 5.2 IP over 4 games at Tacoma and 1-0, 3.00 ERA, 9 K, 1.50 WHIP, .234 BAA, 1 SV in 12.0 IP over 12 games with the Mariners. Over three MLB seasons with the Mariners he was 10-9, 2.82 ERA, 140 K, 1.34 WHIP, .216 BAA, 2 SV in 137.0 IP over 141 games. He originally signed with the Mariners in 2005 as an amateur free agent out of Venezuela. Medina will be 27 on July 27.
