Jose Lobaton traded to Nationals

Jose Lobaton was traded by the Tampa Bay Rays to the Washington Nationals on February 13, 2014 along with Drew Vettleson and Felipe Rivero. In exchange the Rays received Nathan Karns.

Lobaton is a catcher with four seasons MLB experience playing with the Padres and Rays. In 2013 he hit .249/.320/.394 with 7 HR, 32 RBI, 38 R, 0 SB in 100 games with the Rays. For his MLB career he has hit .228/.311/.343 with 9 HR, 52 RBI, 56 R, 0 SB in 191 games. He originally signed with the Padres in 2002 as an amateur free agent out of Venezuela. Lobaton turned 29 on October 21.

Vettleson is an outfielder who played in 2013 at Class A Advanced Charlotte. He hit .274/.331/.388 with 4 HR, 62 RBI, 50 R, 5 SB in 121 games. He was originally drafted by the Rays with the 42nd pick of the first round in 2010. Vettleson will be 23 on July 19. 

LHP Rivero pitched in 2013 at Class A Advanced Charlotte. He was 9-7, 3.40 ERA, 91 K, 1.37 WHIP in 127.0 IP over 25 games. He originally signed with the Rays in 2008 as an amateur free agent out of Venezuela. Rivero will be 23 on July 5th.

RHP Karns split 2013 between Double A Harrisburg and the Nationals. He was 10-6, 3.26 ERA, 155 K, 1.18 WHIP in 132.2 IP over 23 games at Harrisburg and was 0-1, 7.50 ERA, 11 K, 1.92 WHIP in 12.0 IP over 3 games with the Nationals. He was originally drafted by the Nationals in the 12th round in 2009. Karns turned 26 on November 25.
