The Venezuela Winter League is one destination for the rising stars and promising young Major League players to hone their skills between seasons. Here are three hitters and three pitchers who did well this winter and could use it to springboard into 2014.
Second baseman Jose Pirela played for Aguilas de Zulia. He hit .332/.415/.514 with 6 HR, 44 RBI, 58 R, 5 SB in 63 games. In 2013 the Yankees prospect played in at Double A Trenton and Triple A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre where he hit .272/.359/.418 with 10 HR, 62 RBI, 73 R, 18 SB in 124 games at Trenton and hit .304/.333/.304 with 0 HR, 1 RBI, 3 R, 1 SB in 5 games at SWB. He originally signed with the Yankees in 2006 as an amateur free agent out of Venezuela. Pirela turned 24 on November 21.
LHP Alex Torres also played for Aguilas de Zuila. He was 3-1, 2.38 ERA, 34 K, 1.29 WHIP in 34.0 Ip over 7 games. He split 2013 between Triple A Durham and with the Tampa Bay Rays. He was 2-2, 3.52 ERA, 61 K, 1.20 WHIP in 46.0 IP over 9 games at Durham and was 4-2, 1.71 ERA, 62 K, 0.90 WHIP in 58.0 IP over 39 games with the Rays. He was traded to the Padres in January 2014. He originally signed with the Angels in 2005 and an amateur free agent out of Venezuela. Torres turned 26 on December 8th.
RHP Erasmo Ramirez played for Cardenales de Lara. He was 3-1, 2.86 ERA, 17 K, 1.27 WHIP in 28.1 IP over 6 games. He split 2013 between Class A Everett, Double A Jackson, Triple A Tacoma and the Seattle Mariners. He was 0-0, 1.69 ERA, 10 K, 1.31 WHIP in 5.1 IP in 1 game at Everett, was 0-0, 1.80 ERA, 3 K, 1.00 WHIP in 5.0 IP in 1 game at Jackson, was 3-3, 3.09 ERA, 42 K, 1.31 WHIP in 43.2 IP over 7 games at Tacoma and was 5-3, 4.98 ERA, 57 K, 1.45 WHIP in 72.1 IP over 14 games with the Mariners. He originally signed with the Mariners in 2007 as an amateur free agent out of Nicaragua. Ramirez will be 24 on May 2nd.
First baseman Jesus Aguilar played for Leones del Caracas. He hit .327/.403/.597 with 18 HR, 50 RBI, 49 R, 0 SB in 58 games. In 2013 the Indians prospect played at Double A Akron and hit .275/.349/.427 with 16 HR, 105 RBI, 66 R, 0 SB in 130 games. He originally signed with the Indians in 2007 as an amateur free agent out of Venezuela. Aguilar will be 24 on June 30.
Second baseman Carlos Sanchez played for Tiburones de La Guaira. He hit .348/.428/.443 with 1 HR, 31 RBI, 48 R, 5 SB in 58 games. The White Sox prospect played in 2013 at Triple A Charlotte and hit .241/.293/.296 with 0 HR, 28 RBI, 50 R, 16 SB in 112 games. He signed with the White Sox as an amateur free agent in 2009 out of Venezuela. Sanchez will be 22 on June 29.
RHP Henderson Alvarez also played for Tiburones de La Guaira. He was 2-0, 2.74 ERA, 6 K, 1.04 WHIP in 23.0 IP over 5 games. He split 2013 between Class A Advanced Jupiter, Double A Jacksonville and the Miami Marlins and was 1-0, 2.70 ERA, 2 K, 1.00 WHIP in 10.0 IP over 2 games at Jupiter, was 1-0, 0.00 ERA, 13 K, 0.35 WHIP in 14.1 IP over 2 games at Jacksonville and was 5-6, 3.59 ERA, 57 K, 1.14 WHIP in 102.2 IP over 17 games with the Marlins. He originally signed with the Blue Jays in 2006 as an amateur free agent in 2006 out of Venezuela. He was traded to Miami in November 2012. Alvarez will be 24 on April 18.
