The 2014 college baseball season started last weekend across the country. I will again be doing a College Spotlight segment where I will feature one position player and one pitcher each week. The first two to be featured this year are Kent State first baseman Cody Koch and UAB RHP Chase Mallard.
Koch is a senior out of Perkins High School in Cincinnati, OH. The spotlight shines on him because of a perfect 5 for 5 hit game plus a walk in a 14-5 win over Arizona on Saturday. To go with his five singles he also had three RBI and scored a run. Those were his only hits of the weekend as started the season hitting .455/.538/.455 with 0 HR, 3 RBI, 1 R, 0 SB in 3 games. Last year in his junior season he played in 31 games with 12 starts while hitting .200/.297/.277 with 1 HR, 7 RBI, 5 R, 1 SB. He may not have a great baseball future but kudos to the one really good game.
Mallard is a senior out of Cullman High School in Cullman, AL. He did get alot of national attention for his performance against Tennesse-Martin on Friday. Mallard had a line of 7.0 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 13 K while facing 23 batters. The RHP picked up the win in the 5-0 victory. He spent most of his junior season in the bullpen going 2-4, 3.75 ERA, 56 K, 1.49 WHIP, 3 SV in 57.2 IP over 21 games with 4 starts.
