Here is the eighth installment of Two Major One Minor for 2012. The players this week are Scott Diamond, Wade Miley and Terry Doyle.
LHP Scott Diamond of the Minnesota Twins is having good success this season with the Twins after starting the year at Triple A Rochester. For 2012 he is 4-1 with a 2.60 ERA, 26 K, 1.21 WHIP in 34.2 IP over 6 games at Triple A and is 4-1 with a 1.86 ERA, 23 K, 1.19 WHIP in 38.2 IP over 6 games with the Twins. The question is whether this young pitcher has turned the corner and figured things out or is just riding a good luck streak. It is a little concerning that teams are hitting him at a .276 rate which admittedly is much better than the .317 he gave up last season while going 1-5 with the Twins. That will be the thing to watch because he has been hit hard in previous seasons in the minors. But being a lefty he might be given a few extra chances. He originally signed with the Braves as an amateur free agent in 2007. Diamond will be 26 on July 30.
LHP Wade Miley of the Arizona Diamondbacks is making the most of his first full season in the Majors. He split 2011 between Double A Mobile, Triple A Reno and the Diamondbacks going 4-2 with a 4.78 ERA, 46 K, 1.35 WHIP in 75.1 IP over 14 Double A games, was 4-1 with a 3.64 ERA, 56 K, 1.27 WHIP in 54.1 IP over 8 Triple A games and was 4-2 with a 4.50 ERA, 25 K, and 1.65 WHIP in 40.0 IP over 8 games with the Diamondbacks. This season he is 7-2, with a 2.53 ERA, 41 K, 1.09 WHIP in 67.2 IP over 12 games with the Diamondbacks while also holding hitters to a .225 average. For some reason he isn't owned yet in my league but he is worth taking a chance on. He was originally drafted by the Diamondbacks with the 43rd pick of the first round in 2008. Miley will be 26 on November 13.
RHP Terry Doyle of the Chicago White Sox Triple A team Charlotte Knights has shown stretches of dominance this year. Twice he has taken no hit bids late into games only to fall one hit short. This season he is 6-3 with a 2.83 ERA, 71 K, 0.93 WHIP in 76.1 IP over 12 Triple A games while also holding hitters to a .199 average. He appears to have both good strikeout ability and control. He was originally drafted by the White Sox in the 37th round in 2008. Doyle will be 27 on November 2nd.
