Two Major One Minor 062412

Here is the 10th installment of Two Major One Minor for 2012. The players this week are Tom Wilhelmsen, Glen Perkins and Carter Capps.

Tom Wilhelmsen is a RHP who is making a strong stand as the Seattle Mariners new closer. In the last 30 days he is a perfect 5 for 5 in save opportunities and has lowered his ERA over a full point from 4.44 to 2.92. He has also upped his K/9 rate during that span to 12.34 raising his season rate to 11.2. His totals for June are 2-0, 0.00 ERA, 16 K, 0.60 WHIP, 5 SV in 11.2 IP over 9 games. He was originally drafted by the Brewers in the seventh round in 2002. Wilhelmsen turned 28 on December 16.

Glen Perkins of the Minnesota Twins will serve as the closer while Matt Capps is on the DL. The LHP converted his first two chances while also striking out four in two innings. This season he is 1-1 with a 2.93 ERA, 40 K, 1.34 WHIP, 2 SV in 30.2 IP over 32 games. It is promising that he has raised his K/9 to a career high 11.7 this season. He was originally drafted by the Twins with the 22nd pick of the first round in 2004. Perkins turned 28 on March 2nd.

Carter Capps is a RHP who serves as the closer for the Jackson Generals which is the Double A team of the Seattle Mariners. This season Capps is 2-2 with a 1.30 ERA, 53 K, 1.01 WHIP and 10 SV in 34.2 IP over 25 games. That 13.8 K/9 rate combined with the low WHIP could foreshadow a dominant future as a closer. He is also holding apposing hitters to a .195 average. He was originally drafted by the Mariners in the third round in 2011. Capps will be 22 on August 7th.
