2009 USA Today High School Baseball All Americans in 2012


I'm going to take a look at how the members of the 2009 USA Today high school baseball All American team did in 2012. It will be interesting how well early success translated to their later baseball careers.

RHP Matt Hobgood of Norco High School in Norco, CA was drafted by the Baltimore Orioles with the fifth pick of the first round in 2009. He missed the 2012 season recovering from rotator-cuff surgery.

LHP Jordan John of Calallen High School in Corpus Christi, TX went undrafted but enrolled to play at Oklahoma. He was drafted by the Detroit Tigers in the sixth round in 2012. He played 2012 at Rookie Gulf Coast and was 0-0 with a 0.00 ERA, 5 K, 0.27 WHIP in 3.2 IP over 3 games.

RHP Jacob Turner of Westminster Christian Academy in St Louis, MO was drafted by the Detroit Tigers with the ninth pick of the first round in 2009. He split 2012 between the Tigers and Marlins organizations after a July trade. Before the trade he pitched at Class A Advanced Lakeland, Triple A Toledo and the Tigers and was 1-2 with a 1.66 ERA, 17 K, 1.11 WHIP in 21.2 IP over 4 games at Lakeland, was 4-2 with a 3.16 ERA, 40 K, 1.21 WHIP in 62.2 IP over 10 games at Toledo and was 1-1 with a 8.03 ERA, 7 K, 1.95 WHIP in 12.1 IP over 3 games with the Tigers. After the trade he split time with Triple A New Orleans and the Marlins and was 2-0 with a 1.98 ERA, 16 K, 1.43 WHIP in 27.1 over 5 games at New Orleans and was 1-4 with a 3.38 ERA, 29 K, 0.98 WHIP in 42.2 IP over 7 games with the Marlins. 

Catcher Wil Myers of Wesleyan Christian Academy in High Point, NC was drafted by the Kansas City Royals in the third round in 2009. He split 2012 between Double A Northwest Arkansas and Triple A Omaha. He hit .343/.414/.731 with 13 HR, 30 RBI, 32 R, 4 SB in 35 games with Northwest Arkansas and hit .304/.378/.554 with 24 HR, 79 RBI, 66 R, 2 SB in 99 games with Omaha. He was the USA Today Minor League Player of the Year for 2012.

Infielder Bobby Borchering of Bishop Verot High School in Fort Meyers, FL was drafted by the Arizona Diamondbacks with the 16th pick of the first round in 2009. He split 2012 between the Diamondbacks and Astros organizations after being traded in July. Before the trade he played at the Diamondbacks Class A Advanced team Visalia and Double A team Mobile and hit .277/.340/.534 with 18 HR, 60 RBI, 47 R, 0 SB in 81 games at Visalia and hit .130/.183/.208 with 2 HR, 8 RBI, 4 R, 0 SB in 21 games at Mobile. After the trade he played at the Astros Double A team Corpus Christi and hit .189/.275/.389 with 4 HR, 18 RBI, 11 R, 1 SB in 30 games.

Infielder Matt Davidson of Yucaipa High School in Yucaipa, CA was drafted by the Arizona Diamondbacks with the 35th pick of the first round in 2009. He played 2012 at Double A Mobile. He hit .261/.367/.469 with 23 HR, 76 RBI, 81 R, 3 SB in 135 games.

Infielder Scooter Gennett of Sarasota High School in Sarasota, FL was drafted by the Milwaukee Brewers in the 16th round in 2009. He played 2012 at Double A Huntsville. He hit .293/.330/.385 with 5 HR, 44 RBI, 66 R, 11 SB in 133 games.

Infielder Jeff Malm of Bishop Gorman High School in Las Vegas, NV was drafted by the Tampa Bay Rays in the fifth round in 2009. He played 2012 at Class A Bowling Green. He hit .263/.356/.438 with 13 HR, 61 RBI, 67 R, 6 SB in 128 games.

Outfielder Donavan Tate of Cartersville High School in Cartersville, GA was drafted by the San Diego Padres with the third pick of the first round in 2009. He split the 2012 between Class A Fort Wayne and Class A Advanced Lake Elsinore. He hit .207/.294/.254 with 1 HR, 21 RBI, 26 R, 10 SB in 52 games at Fort Wayne and hit .247/.391/.303 with 0 HR, 7 RBI, 28 R, 11 SB in 55 games at Lake Elsinore.

Outfielder Reggie Williams Jr of Brooks-DeBartolo Collegiate High School in Tampa, FL was drafted by the Rangers in the 32nd round but did not sign and played at Middle Georgia College. He was then drafted by the St Louis Cardinals in the 10th round in 2010. He played 2012 at Class A Batavia. He hit .133/.257/.233 with 1 HR, 3 RBI, 5 R, 0 SB in 13 games. He missed the first 50 games of 2012 due to a drug suspension.
