William H (Harry) Wright was inducted into the MLB Hall of Fame class of 1953 along with Edward Barrow, Chief Bender, Thomas Connolly, William Klem, Dizzy Dean, Al Simmons and Bobby Wallace. Wright was an outfielder with seven seasons MLB experience playing with the Boston Red Stockings (1871-1875) and Boston Red Caps (1876-1877). For his MLB career he hit .272/.303/.338 with 4 HR, 111 RBI, 183 R, 9 SB in 180 games.
Wright had a more successful managerial career. He managed the Boston Red Stockings (1871-1875) with a 225-60 record. He managed the Boston Red Caps (1876-1881) with a 254-187 record. From 1882-1883 he managed the Providence Grays to a 110-72 record. The next 10 seasons were with the Philadelphia Quakers\Phillies franchise which he managed to a 636-566 record. Over 23 seasons that is a managerial record of 1225-885 which currently places him at 38th on the all time wins list.
However it was his position of baseball pioneer that warranted the inclusion of Wright to the Hall of Fame. He joined the Knickerbocker Base Ball Club in 1857 and played his first game in 1858. He started working at the Cincinnati Base Ball Club in 1866 and in 1869 formed the first team of all salaried players called the Cincinnati Red Stockings. The Red Stockings toured the continent playing other teams and went undefeated in 1869.
