It may be February but the college baseball season is under way and Division I teams got the first games under their belts last weekend. I will again be doing a College Spotlight segment where I will feature one position player and one pitcher each week. I'm starting year two off with UCLA third baseman Kevin Kramer and Loyola Marymount RHP Trevor Megill.
Kramer is a sophomore out of Turlock High School in Turlock, CA. He started this season with a strong series against Minnesota where he went 6 for 11 at the plate and had six assists and three put outs in the field. After three games he is hitting .545/.647/.727 with 0 HR, 7 RBI, 3 R, 0 SB. Last season as a freshman he hit .281/.351/.322 with 0 HR, 13 RBI, 18 R, 1 SB in 44 games of which 35 he started. Kramer will be a young talent to watch at the hot corner on one of the premier teams this season.
Megill is also a sophomore out of Bixby Charter School in Huntington Beach, CA. He is an imposing 6-8, 235 on the mound and had little trouble keeping Utah in check as the Lions won 1-0. Megill faced 25 batters and only four reached base with 2 hits, a walk and a HBP for a .091 average against. To start the season he is 1-0 with a 0.00 ERA, 11 K, 0.43 WHIP in 7.0 IP. Last season as a freshman he was 5-8 with a 3.57 ERA, 82 K, 1.18 WHIP in 90.2 IP over 15 games with 15 starts. He reminds me of the Tampa Bay Rays Jeff Niemann.
