John Montgomery (Monte) Ward was inducted into the MLB Hall of Fame class of 1964 along with Luke Appling, Red Faber, Burleigh Grimes, Miller Huggins, Timothy Keefe and Henry Manush. Ward was a SS\2B\RHP with 17 seasons MLB experience playing with the Providence Grays (1878-1882), New York Gothams (1883-1884), New York Giants (1885-1889, 1893-1894), Brooklyn Ward's Wonders (1890) and Brooklyn Grooms (1892-1893). For his MLB career he hit .275/.314/.341 with 26 HR, 869 RBI, 1410 R, 540 SB in 1827 games.
I believe his three best seasons were 1887 when he hit .338/.375/.391 with 1 HR, 53 RBI, 114 R, 111 SB in 129 games, 1890 when he hit .335/.393/.426 with 4 HR, 60 RBI, 134 R, 63 SB in 128 games and 1893 when he hit .328/.379/.415 with 2 HR, 77 RBI, 129 R, 46 SB in 135 games.
For his MLB career as a pitcher he was 164-103 with a 2.10 ERA, 920 K, 1.04 WHIP, 3 SV, 245 complete games, 24 shut outs in 2469.2 IP over 293 games.
I believe his three best seasons as a pitcher were 1879 when he was 47-19 with a 2.15 ERA, 239 K, 1.03 WHIP, 1 SV, 58 complete games, 2 shut outs in 587.0 IP over 70 games, 1878 when he was 22-13 with a 1.51 ERA, 116 K, 1.02 WHIP, 37 complete games, 6 shut outs in 334.0 IP over 37 games and 1880 when he was 39-24 with a 1.74 ERA, 230 K, 0.92 WHIP, 1 SV, 59 complete games, 8 shut outs in 595.0 IP over 70 games.
Ward led the National League in wins in 1879. He led the NL in ERA in 1878. He led the NL in strikeouts in 1879. He led the NL in shut outs in 1880. He led the NL in saves in 1879 and 1882 (1). He led the NL in stolen bases in 1887 and 1892 (88).
Ward pitched a perfect game on June 17, 1880 against the Buffalo Bisons.
Ward also pulled double duty as the manager for the Grays (1880), Gothams/Giants (1884, 1893-1894), Ward's Wonders (1890) and Grooms (1891-1892) compiling a 412-320 career record.
The Brooklyn Ward's Wonders were a team in the Players League. Ward had helped found the League to compete with the National League but it only lasted one season.
