John G Clarkson was inducted into the MLB Hall of Fame class of 1963 along with Elmer Flick, Sam Rice and Eppa Rixey. Clarkson was RHP\OF with 12 seasons MLB experience playing with the Worchester Ruby Legs (1882), Chicago White Stockings (1884-1887), Boston Beaneaters (1888-1892) and Cleveland Spiders (1892-1894). For his MLB career he hit .219/.250/.319 with 24 HR, 232 RBI, 254 R, 31 SB in 546 games. His MLB career was much more successful on the mound as he was 328-178 with a 2.81 ERA, 1978 K, 1.21 WHIP, 5 SV, 485 complete games, 37 shut outs in 4536.1 IP over 531 games.
I believe his three best seasons were 1885 when he was 53-16 with a 1.85 ERA, 308 K, 0.95 WHIP, 68 complete games, 10 shut outs in 623.0 IP over 70 games, 1889 when he was 49-19 with a 2.73 ERA, 284 K, 1.28 WHIP, 1 SV, 68 complete games, 8 shut outs in 620.0 IP over 73 games and 1887 when he was 38-21 with a 3.08 ERA, 237 K, 1.16 WHIP, 56 complete games, 2 shut outs in 523.0 IP over 60 games.
Clarkson led the National League in wins in 1885, 1887 and 1889. He led the NL in ERA in 1889. He led the NL in strikeouts in 1885, 1887 and 1889. He led the NL in shut outs in 1885 and 1889. He led the NL in saves in 1891 (3).
His 53 wins in 1885 is the second most in MLB history. His 328 career wins are 12th in MLB history.
