Lucius B (Luke) Appling was inducted into the MLB Hall of Fame class of 1964 along with Red Faber, Burleigh Grimes, Miller Huggins, Timothy Keefe, Henry Manush and Monte Ward. Appling was a SS\3B with 20 seasons MLB experience playing all with the Chicago White Sox (1930-1943, 1945-1950). He missed the 1944 season while serving in the United States Army during World War II. For his MLB career he hit .310/.399/.398 with 45 HR, 1116 RBI, 1319 R, 179 SB in 2422 games.
I believe his best three seasons were 1936 when he hit .388/.474/.508 with 6 HR, 128 RBI, 111 R, 10 SB in 138 games, 1937 when he hit .317/.407/.439 with 4 HR, 77 RBI, 98 R, 18 SB in 154 games and 1933 when he hit .322/.379/.443 with 6 HR, 85 RBI, 90 R, 6 SB in 151 games.
Appling was the American League batting champ in 1936 and 1943 (.328)
He was an All Star seven times in 1936, 1939, 1940, 1941, 1943, 1946 and 1947. He was second in AL MVP voting in 1936 and 1943.
He had a short stint as manager with the Kansas City Athletics in 1967 compiling a 10-30 record.
